Most children stop napping somewhere between ages 3 and 5. By age 5, about 94 percent have given it up. But the spread around those averages is far wider than most articles let on, and that matters if your 4 year old still needs two hours while their friends have moved on.

The other thing worth knowing up front: dropping the nap is a sign of brain maturation, not a milestone to hurry. There is decent evidence that pushing a child out of napping before they are ready costs them something real.

When Kids Actually Stop Napping

Now the part that gets left out. The variation between individual studies is enormous. At 36 months, the range across studies ran from 4.8 percent to 65 percent stopped. At 48 months, 26.5 to 78.2 percent. At 60 months, 36.9 to 96 percent.1

A twenty-fold difference between studies at the same age tells you this is not a milestone with a schedule. The researchers describe the preschool period as particularly dynamic, which is a polite way of saying it is all over the place.

Nap timing also drifts later as children get older, settling toward a midpoint around 2pm.1

How Much Sleep Kids Need in Total

The nap question only makes sense against total sleep. These are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine consensus figures, endorsed by the AAP:

The useful way to read this: if your child drops the nap and total sleep falls below the range, bedtime needs to move earlier to compensate. If total sleep holds, the nap was genuinely surplus.

What Our Own Data Shows About Naps

The number worth sitting with: among children aged 2 and over, 64 percent still nap once a day and 25 percent have dropped naps entirely. Both groups are large. There is no age at which the majority flips cleanly, which is exactly what the academic meta-analysis found too.

Signs Your Child Is Genuinely Ready

  • Not fussy in the run-up to naptime. Content and playing happily at 2pm.
  • Lying in bed 30 minutes or more before falling asleep at naptime. A genuinely tired child falls asleep quickly.
  • Taking noticeably longer to fall asleep at night.
  • Waking an hour or two earlier in the morning.

The one signal that separates ready from not ready

This is the most useful line in the clinical guidance, and it is about bedtime mood rather than bedtime behavior. Is your child in a fairly good mood at bedtime but just not tired? That suggests you can drop the nap. Are they crabby and showing negative behaviors? They probably still need it, even if they do not seem tired.3

The trap is reading bedtime resistance as not tired. A child fighting bed is often overtired, not undertired. Watch mood, not protest.

Why Not to Rush It

There is real evidence that naps do specific cognitive work in the preschool years, and that losing them early has a measurable cost.

In a study of 40 children aged 36 to 67 months, classroom naps averaging 77 minutes produced 75 percent recall on a memory task, against 65 percent when the same children were kept awake. The effect was on retention rather than learning, since immediate recall was equivalent either way. The benefit also persisted into the next morning.4

The important nuance: habitual nappers lost around 15 percent recall accuracy when deprived of the nap, while children who did not usually nap showed no significant difference.4 The researchers framed it as not how good the nap is, but how bad staying awake is. If your child still naps regularly, they are getting something from it.

There is also a plausible biological account of why children stop when they do. The hippocampal maturation hypothesis holds that as the memory network matures, storage becomes more efficient, sleep pressure builds more slowly across the day, and the nap becomes unnecessary.5 In one study of 200 children aged 4 to 8, those still napping had larger CA1 hippocampal volumes than those who had transitioned.6

So nap cessation looks like a marker of brain development rather than a habit to be trained. Which argues for following your child rather than setting a target date.

Handling the In-Between Months

The transition is not a switch. Expect months where your child needs a nap some days and not others, and where the same routine produces different results on consecutive days.3

Switch naptime to quiet time

Keep the slot in the day, drop the requirement to sleep. Books in bed, a puzzle, something calm and solitary. This preserves the routine, gives your child a chance to fall asleep on the days they need to, and gives you a predictable break.3

Move bedtime earlier

About 30 minutes earlier is the usual recommendation to bridge the gap.3 On days a nap gets skipped, earlier still.

Cap any nap that does happen

If your child falls asleep, keep it short enough not to push bedtime late. A long late nap during the transition tends to create a difficult night.

Do not overschedule the late afternoon

Newly non-napping children are noticeably crankier in the late afternoon. Plan accordingly for a few weeks.

A Note on the Numbers You Will See Elsewhere

You will find other percentages for this topic, and some differ substantially from the ones above. Figures like 60 percent still napping at 4 and 30 percent at 5 circulate widely and are more conservative than the meta-analysis.

We have used the systematic review numbers because they pool 44 papers and 73 data points rather than a single cohort.1 Worth saying plainly though: the review authors rated risk of bias and measurement heterogeneity across the source studies as high. These are the best available figures, not precise ones.

How much sleep does a preschooler need without a nap?

The AASM consensus, endorsed by the AAP, is 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours for ages 3 to 5, including any naps. Once the nap goes, that has to come from night sleep, so bedtime usually needs to move about 30 minutes earlier to keep the total in range.
