A prayer for baby is often the first thing new parents whisper in the hospital room or at the first 3 a.m. feed. Whether you are holding your own newborn or praying for a friend’s new arrival, these original prayers and blessings give you the words.

Below are short baby prayers, a prayer for a new baby from mom and dad, a baby blessing prayer to say over your little one, prayers for the first days and nights at home, prayers for a new baby you can send to friends, prayers for new parents, a prayer for a baby in the NICU, and a few verses. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture.

For bedtime specifically, see our prayer for baby to sleep. Sending a card instead? Our new baby wishes have ready-to-copy messages.

Short Prayers for a Newborn Baby

A short prayer for new born baby moments: the first hold, the car seat, the cradle.

Lord, thank You for this tiny life. Hold our baby close, always. Amen.
God, You knew this little one before we did. Keep them safe in Your hands. Amen.
Father, bless these ten fingers, ten toes, and this brand new heart. Amen.
Jesus, welcome to the world, little one. May you always know you are loved. Amen.
Lord, give our baby health, peace, and a lifetime of Your care. Amen.
God, thank You for answering our prayers with this baby. Amen.
Father, watch over this little one when we cannot. Amen.
Lord, let our baby grow in strength, in kindness, and in You. Amen.

If You Only Read One

God, You knew this little one before we did. Keep them safe in Your hands. Amen.

New parents often feel how little control they really have. This prayer says that out loud, with relief rather than fear, and it works whether you are praying over your own baby or someone else’s.

Prayer for a New Baby From Mom and Dad

Lord, we cannot believe this baby is ours. Thank You for bringing them safely into our arms. Give them good health, gentle sleep, and a happy heart. Help us be the parents they need: patient when we are tired, wise when we are unsure, and full of love on every ordinary day. Amen.
Father, this is our first baby and we do not know what we are doing yet. Teach us. Give us grace with each other and with ourselves while we learn. Amen.
God, thank You for this new brother (or sister) in our family. Help our older children feel loved and included as we welcome the baby home. Amen.
Lord, I carried this baby for nine months and now I get to hold them. Thank You. Heal my body, steady my heart, and help me rest when I can. Amen.
Father, as this baby’s dad, I ask You to make me strong and gentle. Help me protect them, provide for them, and be present for every small moment. Amen.

Baby Blessing Prayer

A baby blessing prayer can be said with a hand on the baby’s head, at a dedication, a homecoming, or the night before a baptism.

May the Lord bless you, little one. May He keep you safe in body, mind, and spirit. May you grow in wisdom and kindness, and may you always know you are His. Amen.
We bless you, sweet baby, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. May your life be full of love and full of faith. Amen.
Little one, may your eyes see beauty, your ears hear kindness, your hands do good work, and your heart always find its way home to God. Amen.
Lord, as our family gathers around this baby today, we promise to love them, teach them about You, and walk with them all their days. Bless this child. Amen.

Prayers for the First Days and Nights at Home

Bringing baby home

Lord, we are walking through our front door as a bigger family. Bless this home with peace, and help every one of us settle in. Amen.

Night feeds

God, it is the middle of the night and the house is quiet. Thank You for this moment with my baby. Help us both get back to sleep. Amen.
Father, feeding is harder than I expected. Give me patience, give my baby strength, and give us both what we need. Amen.

Doctor visits

Lord, bless our baby’s checkup today. Give the doctor wisdom, keep our little one healthy, and calm my nerves. Amen.

Bath time and naps

Jesus, as I wash this tiny body, wash our home in Your peace. Amen.
God, bless this nap. Let our baby rest, and let me rest too. Amen.

Those first weeks are a blur of feeds and naps. Our newborn sleep schedule week by week shows what is normal, and our bedtime prayers for kids grow with your child.

Prayers for a New Baby to Send Friends and Family

A prayer for a new baby is a meaningful thing to text or write in a card for a friend, a sibling, or a coworker who just welcomed a baby.

Congratulations! I am praying for your sweet baby: for health, for peaceful nights, and for a lifetime of being loved by you.
Thanking God with you for this beautiful baby. Praying He gives you rest, patience, and so much joy.
Praying for your little one today, and for you too, Mama. May God carry you through these first weeks.
From a grandparent. Lord, thank You for my new grandchild. Bless this baby, bless their parents, and let me be a steady, loving presence in their life. Amen.
From a godparent. God, I promise to pray for this child all their life. Keep them close to You and help me keep that promise. Amen.

Grandparents, see our prayer for grandchildren. For card wording without a prayer, try our new baby quotes.

Prayer for New Parents

Lord, bless these new parents. Give them sleep when they can get it, help when they need it, and grace with each other when they are worn thin. Amen.
Father, protect this new mom’s body and mind as she heals. Surround her with people who notice when she needs support. Amen.
God, help this couple remember they are a team. Let this baby bring them closer, not further apart. Amen.

Prayer for a Baby in the NICU or a Sick Newborn

If your baby is in the NICU or unwell, these gentle prayers are for you. Prayer and medical care go together: if your baby is under three months old and has a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, or seems unusually sleepy, floppy, or hard to feed, call your pediatrician right away, as the American Academy of Pediatrics advises.

Lord, our baby is so small and the machines are so big. Hold our little one tonight. Give the nurses and doctors skill and gentleness, and give us strength to keep showing up. Amen.
Father, I cannot fix this. You can hold it. Please heal my baby and help me breathe. Amen.
God, for every hour we wait for news, be near. For every small step forward, thank You. Amen.

Bible Verses to Pray Over a Newborn

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:1 Samuel 1:27 (KJV)
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.Mark 10:16 (KJV)
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.Numbers 6:24 to 26 (KJV)

How to Pray for Your Newborn

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study. A newborn gives you plenty of quiet moments to start.

MomentWhat to prayHow long
First holdA short prayer of thanksOne breath
Each feedOne line for health and growthA few seconds
BedtimeA baby blessing prayerUnder a minute
CheckupsA prayer for wisdom and healthIn the waiting room
When you are exhaustedA prayer for yourselfWhenever you need it
Small moments in a newborn’s day that fit a prayer.
  • Pray out loud. Babies love the sound of your voice, and it calms you too.
  • Keep a prayer journal. A line a week becomes a keepsake for your child.
  • Ask others to pray. A grandparent or friend praying for you is real support.
  • Be honest when it is hard. Tired, scared, and grateful can all be in the same prayer.
