A house blessing prayer turns four walls into a home. Whether you just got the keys, are bringing a new baby home for the first time, or simply want to invite God into the place you already live, these prayers give you words to bless every room and everyone inside.

Below you will find short house blessing prayers, a prayer for house blessing and protection, a room by room blessing you can walk through together, a blessing for a new home with a new baby, a nursery blessing, prayers for moving day, Bible verses for a house blessing, and simple steps for blessing your home yourself. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture or tradition.

Short House Blessing Prayers

Say one of these as you walk through the front door for the first time, or write it on a card and tuck it by the entry.

Lord, bless this house and everyone who walks through its door. Let it be a place of peace. Amen.
God, make this home a shelter for our bodies and a resting place for our hearts. Amen.
Father, may love live here, laughter echo here, and Your presence fill every room. Amen.
Jesus, be the first guest in our home and the one who never leaves. Amen.
Lord, let everyone who comes into this house leave a little lighter than they arrived. Amen.
Peace to this house, and to all who live and visit here. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, bless this house from the front step to the back fence. Guard it from harm, fill it with kindness, and let every person who lives here feel safe, loved, and at rest. Amen.

This one covers the three things almost every family wants from a home: protection, kindness inside the walls, and real rest. It is short enough to pray at the front door with everyone holding hands.

Prayer for House Blessing and Protection

Heavenly Father, we dedicate this home to You. Surround it with Your protection day and night. Guard its doors and windows, its roof and foundation, and everyone who sleeps beneath it. Keep away fire, storm, sickness, and every kind of harm. Let this be a place where Your peace is stronger than any fear. Amen.
Lord, set a hedge of protection around this house. Watch over our coming in and our going out. Keep our children safe in their rooms and in the yard, and bring every one of us home safely at the end of each day. Amen.
God, protect this home from the quieter dangers too: bitterness, harsh words, and the slow drift apart. Make this a house where people apologize quickly and forgive fully. Amen.
Father, when we lock the door at night, remind us that You are the true keeper of this house. Let us sleep in peace because You never sleep. Amen.

Room by Room House Blessing

Many families walk through the house together and pray a short blessing in each room. Kids love carrying a candle (with an adult) or simply leading the way. Adapt the rooms to your home.

The front door. Lord, bless every coming and going through this door. Welcome friends, protect against harm, and let this be a door that opens to kindness. Amen.
The kitchen. God, bless this kitchen and every meal made here. Let our table be full of good food, good talk, and gratitude. Amen.
The living room. Father, bless this room where we gather. Fill it with laughter, game nights, honest talks, and room for everyone. Amen.
Our bedroom. Lord, make this a place of rest and closeness. Protect our marriage and our sleep. Amen.
The children’s rooms. Jesus, watch over our children here. Give them sweet dreams, brave hearts, and the sure knowledge that they are loved. Amen.
The bathroom. God, bless the ordinary routines of this room: the bath times, the brushed teeth, the getting ready. Let even small moments here be gentle. Amen.
The yard. Lord, bless this ground. Let it be a place for play, for growing things, and for long summer evenings together. Amen.

House Blessing Prayer for a New Home With a New Baby

Moving with a newborn, or bringing a baby home to the house you just bought, is a lot of change at once. These prayers are for that season.

Lord, this is our baby’s first home. Let these walls be the place where they feel safe before they understand what safe means. Fill every room with gentle voices, steady love, and Your peace. Amen.
Father, we are tired and surrounded by boxes, and we are so grateful. Help us make this house a home one small step at a time, and give us grace with each other while we do. Amen.
God, bless the nights in this new home. Help our little one settle, help us rest, and let the 3 a.m. feeds be quiet moments with You instead of moments of worry. Amen.
Jesus, may our child grow up here knowing they belong: to us, to this family, and to You. Amen.

A practical blessing for a new home

Before baby moves in, walk the house at crawling height. Anchor heavy furniture and TVs to the wall, cover outlets, move cords out of reach, and test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The safest sleep space is a bare crib or bassinet, on its back, with nothing else in it. See our safe sleep environment guide and the American Academy of Pediatrics home safety tips in the sources below.

Nursery Blessing Prayer

Lord, bless this nursery and the little one who will sleep here. Watch over the crib through every night. Give our baby deep, peaceful sleep, and give us gentle patience for the nights that are not peaceful. Amen.
God, every detail of this room was chosen with love. Let our child feel that love every time they wake here. Amen.
Father, may this be a room of lullabies, quiet feeds, story time, and first words. Amen.

Setting up the room? Our nursery decor ideas are full of calm, sleep-friendly inspiration. For bedtime prayers to say in that room, see prayer for a newborn baby and night prayers.

Prayers for Moving Day

Leaving the old home. Lord, thank You for every memory we made in this house: the first steps, the birthdays, the hard nights and the good mornings. We leave it with grateful hearts. Bless the family who lives here next. Amen.
On the road. God, keep us safe as we travel. Protect everyone helping us move and every box in the truck. Amen.
The first night. Father, it does not feel like home yet, but You are here, and that is enough for tonight. Give us rest. Amen.

Bible Verses for a House Blessing

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.Luke 10:5 (KJV)
but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.Psalm 127:1 (KJV)
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.Proverbs 24:3 to 4 (KJV)
And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;Isaiah 32:18 (KJV)
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:8 (KJV)
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

How to Bless Your Home Yourself

You do not need a ceremony to bless your house, though many churches will happily send a pastor or priest. In the Catholic tradition, many families also bless their homes each year around the Epiphany in January. Here is a simple version any family can do.

  • Gather everyone at the front door. Read Luke 10:5 together: ‘Peace be to this house.’
  • Walk room by room. Pray one short blessing in each space, using the room by room prayers above.
  • Let the kids help. They can choose a room, read a line, or carry a small cross or Bible.
  • End at the table. Share a meal or a dessert and say a closing prayer of thanks.
  • Make it a tradition. Bless the house again each year on your move-in anniversary.

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center. A blessing at the front door is a lovely way to start that habit in a new home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short house blessing prayer?

Try this: ‘Lord, bless this house and everyone who walks through its door. Let it be a place of peace. Amen.’ It is short enough to say together at the front door on your first day in a new home.

What is a good prayer for house blessing and protection?

Ask God to guard the doors, roof, and foundation, to keep away fire, storm, and sickness, and to bring every family member home safely. Psalm 121:8, ‘The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in,’ pairs well with it.

Can I bless my own house without a priest or pastor?

Yes. Any family can bless their home by gathering at the front door, walking room by room with a short prayer in each space, and ending with a prayer of thanks. Many families invite clergy too, but it is not required.

What Bible verse is used for a house blessing?

Luke 10:5, ‘Peace be to this house,’ and Joshua 24:15, ‘as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD,’ are the two most popular. Psalm 127:1 and Proverbs 24:3 to 4 are also common.

Peaceful nights for your whole household.
