The classic Catholic meal prayer is short enough for a three-year-old to learn and old enough that your grandparents probably said it too: Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts. Below is the traditional grace, the prayer after meals, and original Catholic dinner prayers for every kind of table.

You will find the traditional grace before and after meals (labeled as traditional), how to pray them with the Sign of the Cross, a simple prayer before meal Catholic families can say in one breath, Catholic dinner prayers for families, kids, Sundays, and feast days, prayers with the saints, and two verses about daily bread. Every prayer not labeled traditional or as Scripture is original to Betteroo.

Looking for a grace that works for any Christian table? See our prayer before eating page. For the end of the day, our Catholic night prayer collection follows the same tradition.

The Traditional Catholic Meal Prayer

This is the grace most Catholic families say before eating. It is customary to begin and end with the Sign of the Cross.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.Sign of the Cross (Traditional Catholic prayer)
Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.Grace Before Meals (Traditional Catholic prayer)

Some families add a line after it, such as remembering the hungry or those who have died. A few original additions:

And may the Lord provide for the needs of others. Amen.
And bless the hands that grew, carried, and cooked this food. Amen.
And may the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.
And help us to be grateful, generous, and kind at this table. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This is the traditional Catholic grace, and there is a reason it has lasted: it is short, it names God as the giver, and children can learn it in a week. Start with the Sign of the Cross and you have a complete Catholic meal prayer.

Grace After Meals

Grace after meals is less common today, but many Catholic families and schools still say it. The traditional version is labeled below, followed by original prayers to close a meal.

We give thee thanks, for all thy benefits, Almighty God, who live and reign for ever. Amen.Grace After Meals (Traditional Catholic prayer)
Thank You, Lord, for this meal and for the people who shared it. Send us from this table with full hearts. Amen.
Father, we are fed. Now help us feed others with our kindness this week. Amen.
Lord, thank You for the conversation, the laughter, and even the spilled milk. Amen.

Simple Prayer Before Meal Catholic Families Can Say Quickly

Busy weeknight? A simple prayer before meal Catholic kids can say on their own is enough. Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

Jesus, thank You for this food. Bless it and bless us. Amen.
Lord, You gave us our daily bread again today. Thank You. Amen.
Father, bless this meal, this family, and this day. Amen.
Come, Lord Jesus, sit with us at this table. Amen.
Holy Spirit, fill our hearts the way this food fills our plates. Amen.
Mary, Mother of God, thank you for caring for our family. Lord, bless this food. Amen.

Catholic Dinner Prayers for Families

A Catholic dinner prayer can be a little longer on nights when the whole family is home. Let a different person lead each night.

Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us all home to this table tonight. Bless this food and the hands that made it. Help us listen to each other, forgive each other, and love each other the way You love us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord Jesus, You shared many meals with Your friends. Be our guest tonight. Bless our food, our conversation, and our family. Amen.
God our Father, we thank You for this meal and for every good thing You gave us today. Remember those who are hungry tonight, and show us how to help them. Amen.
Lord, it was a long day for all of us. Thank You for this moment to sit down together. Bless this food and give us peace. Amen.
Holy Family of Nazareth, you ate simple meals together in a simple home. Pray for our family, that our table may be a place of love. Amen.

Catholic Meal Prayers for Kids

Rhythm and repetition help little ones learn. These are short and easy to say together.

Thank You, God, for my food, thank You for my family. Bless us all and keep us close. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
God made the sun, God made the rain, God made the food we eat again. Thank You, God! Amen.
Dear Jesus, bless my plate, bless my cup, help me eat my veggies up. Amen.
Guardian angel, sit with me, thank you God for all I see. Amen.

Catholic Meal Prayers for Sundays and Feast Days

Sunday dinner. Lord, on this day of the Resurrection, thank You for gathering us after Mass and around this table. Bless our food and keep us united all week. Amen.
Thanksgiving. Father, the Eucharist itself means thanksgiving. Today we thank You for this feast, for our country, and for every person at this table. Amen.
Christmas. Lord Jesus, born in Bethlehem, which means house of bread, bless this Christmas meal and fill our home with Your joy. Amen.
Easter. Risen Lord, the fast is over and the feast has come. Thank You for new life, for this food, and for one another. Alleluia. Amen.
A Friday in Lent. Lord, as we eat simply today, help us remember Your sacrifice and the people who have less than we do. Amen.
A baptism or First Communion. Father, thank You for welcoming this child into Your family. Bless this celebration meal and everyone who came to share it. Amen.

Hosting a holiday? Our Thanksgiving prayer and Christmas prayer pages have longer prayers for the big days.

Meal Prayers With the Saints

Many Catholic families ask a saint to pray with them at the table. These are original prayers inspired by well-loved saints.

Saint Joseph, provider for the Holy Family, pray for our family and for every family without enough to eat. Lord, bless this meal. Amen.
Saint Martha, you served Jesus at your table. Help us welcome Him at ours. Lord, bless this food. Amen.
Saint Francis, you thanked God for brother sun and sister rain. Help us be grateful for the earth that gave us this food. Amen.

Bible Verses About Daily Bread

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.Psalm 145:15 to 16 (KJV)
Give us this day our daily bread.Matthew 6:11 (KJV)

How to Make Grace a Family Habit

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study, and mealtime is one of the easiest places a family can make that a habit.

One simple way to rotate Catholic meal prayers through the week.
  • Start with the Sign of the Cross. It signals to kids that it is time to pause.
  • Hold hands or fold them. Either works; the point is a physical moment of stillness.
  • Rotate the leader. Kids take ownership when it is their night.
  • Add one intention. ‘And for Grandma, who is sick’ keeps the prayer personal.

Family dinner gets a lot easier when everyone at the table has slept. Here is what most parents are up against, from Betteroo’s annual parent survey.
