A Thanksgiving prayer does not have to be a speech. The best ones are short enough that the food stays hot and honest enough that everyone at the table means the amen. Whoever is asked to say grace this year, there is a prayer here that will fit in your own voice.

This collection includes short, simple Thanksgiving prayers, prayers for family and friends, Thanksgiving Day prayers for the host to say over dinner, powerful prayers of thanksgiving for your own quiet time, prayers children can say, traditional Catholic graces and Scripture, and a few for the years when gratitude is hard.

Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is marked as traditional or as Scripture. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. For toasts and cards to go with the prayer, see our family Thanksgiving quotes.

Short, Simple Thanksgiving Prayers

For the person who has just been volunteered to pray and has about ten seconds to prepare. Each short simple Thanksgiving prayer here can be said in one breath.

Lord, thank You for this food, this family, and this day. Amen.
God, for full plates and fuller hearts, we thank You. Amen.
Father, thank You for everyone at this table and everyone we wish were here. Amen.
Lord, You have given us so much. Give us one thing more: grateful hearts. Amen.
Thank You, God, for the hands that grew this food, the hands that cooked it, and the hands we hold right now. Amen.
Lord, bless this meal, bless this home, and bless those who have less tonight. Amen.
For food, for family, for another year together: thank You, Lord. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Thank You, God, for the hands that grew this food, the hands that cooked it, and the hands we hold right now. Amen.

It is short, it thanks the cook out loud, and it works whether your table is devout, mixed, or mostly there for the pie.

Thanksgiving Prayers for Family and Friends

A Thanksgiving prayer for family and friends names the people, not just the food. These are a little longer, for a table that will sit still for thirty seconds.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the people around this table. For the ones who drove all day, the ones who cooked since dawn, and the ones who make us laugh until we cannot breathe. Thank You for the years behind us and the ones still to come. Bless each person here and keep us close when we go our separate ways. Amen.
Lord, thank You for friends who have become family and family who have stayed friends. For the people who showed up this year when it counted. Bless them the way they have blessed us. Amen.
God, this table holds different opinions, different stories, and one shared love. Help us listen more than we argue today. Let gratitude be louder than anything that divides us. Amen.
Father, thank You for the generations at this table: the grandparents who started it, the parents in the middle of it, and the children running around it. Let what is good in this family be handed down. Amen.
Lord, we thank You for the new faces at this table this year: the baby, the new spouse, the friend with nowhere else to go. Make them feel at home with us. Amen.
God, bless the friends and family who could not be here. Close the miles between us with Your love, and bring us together again soon. Amen.

Thanksgiving Day Prayers for the Dinner Table

For the host, the grandparent, or whoever sits at the head of the table. A Thanksgiving Day prayer can widen the circle a little: to the people who grew the food, the people working the holiday, and the people with less.

Lord, on this Thanksgiving Day we stop to say what we too often forget: everything we have is a gift. The food in front of us, the roof over us, the people beside us. We did not earn the sunrise or the harvest. Receive our thanks, and teach us to live gratefully long after the dishes are done. Amen.
Gracious God, we thank You for this meal and the abundance it represents. As we eat, we remember those who are hungry, those who are alone, and those working today so others can rest. Make us generous with what we have been given. Amen.
Father, thank You for a year of daily bread. Some of it came easily and some came hard, but it came. For every ordinary provision we never thought to notice, we thank You today. Amen.
Lord, bless the cook, bless the food, and bless the conversation. Let nobody leave this table hungry or unloved. Amen.
God of the harvest, thank You for the earth that feeds us and the farmers who tend it. We receive this meal with thanks and ask You to bless it to our bodies and our bodies to Your service. Amen.

How to say grace at Thanksgiving without it getting awkward

  • Give a ten second warning so people can put down the serving spoons.
  • Invite, do not instruct: ‘I would like to say a short prayer, join me if you like.’
  • Keep it under thirty seconds when the food is already on the table.
  • Thank the cook by name. It is the one line everyone agrees with.
  • End clearly with ‘Amen’ so people know when to pick up a fork.

Powerful Prayers of Thanksgiving

These are for your own quiet time, before the house wakes up or after the last guest leaves. A powerful prayer of thanksgiving is specific. It names the gifts, including the ones that did not look like gifts when they arrived.

Lord, I thank You for what You gave this year and for what You withheld. I thank You for the answered prayers I celebrated and the unanswered ones that protected me from what I could not see. You have been faithful in the plenty and in the lack. My whole life is a debt of gratitude, and today I pay a little of it in praise. Amen.
Father, I name them before You: health I take for granted, work to do, a bed, clean water, people who love me, and mercy I did not deserve. If I counted every gift I would still be counting at midnight. Thank You. Amen.
God, You carried me through things this year I was sure would break me. I am still here, and that is Your doing. I give You thanks not because everything is easy but because You have been good in the middle of it. Amen.
Lord, forgive me for the days I looked at a full life and saw only what was missing. Open my eyes. Turn my complaining into thanksgiving and my worry into trust. Amen.
Almighty God, giver of every good gift, let my gratitude be more than words at a table. Let it show in how I treat the people You gave me and how freely I share what You have put in my hands. Amen.

Thankful for your baby, and still desperate for sleep?

Both can be true. Holiday travel, late dinners, and a house full of relatives are hard on little sleepers. Betteroo builds a gentle, personalized sleep plan around your child’s age and temperament. Three minutes to start.

Thanksgiving Prayers for Kids

Children are more likely to join in when the prayer is theirs to say. The last one is a round-the-table prayer that works even with toddlers. For crafts and games to keep them busy while the turkey rests, see our Thanksgiving crafts for kids and Thanksgiving activities for kids.

Thank You, God, for turkey and pie, for family and friends, and for loving me. Amen.
Dear God, thank You for my home, my food, my family, and my toys. Help me share them. Amen.
God, thank You for the sun and trees, for mashed potatoes and for peas, for all the people that I love, and for Your care from up above. Amen.
Around the table. Dear God, today I am thankful for (each person names one thing). Thank You for listening to all of us. Amen.

Research summarized by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley suggests that gratitude develops gradually through childhood, and that one of the most useful things parents can do is talk with young children about feelings and thoughts, their own and other people’s. A prayer said out loud at the table does exactly that: it names who gave what, and why it matters.

Catholic Thanksgiving Prayers and Scripture

Many families, Catholic and otherwise, say a traditional grace on Thanksgiving. The first two prayers below are the traditional Catholic graces before and after meals. The verses are from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.Traditional Catholic grace before meals
We give Thee thanks, Almighty God, for all Thy benefits, who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.Traditional Catholic grace after meals
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.Psalm 100:4 (KJV)
O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

Thanksgiving Prayers for a Hard Year or an Empty Chair

Not every Thanksgiving is easy. If someone is missing from the table, or the year has taken more than it gave, these prayers make room for that without pretending.

Lord, there is an empty chair at our table this year. We thank You for the life that once filled it and for every Thanksgiving we were given together. Hold our grief gently today, and let our memories be a blessing. Amen.
God, it has been a hard year, and gratitude does not come easily. I offer You what thanks I have. It is small, and it is honest. Meet me here. Amen.
Father, for those eating alone today, be their company. For those who are sick, be their comfort. For those who are far from home, be their peace. Amen.
Lord, I am thankful and I am tired, and I trust You can hold both. Thank You for getting us this far. Amen.

New parents often land in that last prayer. Being grateful for a baby and worn out by one are not opposites, and most parents are living both at once.

Matching a Thanksgiving prayer to the people around the table.

Thanksgiving has been a national day of thanks in the United States since President Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation, and Congress fixed the date as the fourth Thursday in November in 1941. The habit behind it is older and simpler than either: stop, look at what you have, and say thank you out loud.

Keep the gratitude going with a morning prayer to start each day and a night prayer to end it. For the rest of the holiday: Thanksgiving jokes for kids, blessed family quotes, Bible quotes about family, and our fall quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short, simple Thanksgiving prayer?

‘Lord, thank You for this food, this family, and this day. Amen.’ It takes five seconds, covers the three things most people are grateful for, and suits a table with mixed beliefs. If you want one more line, add a thank you to the cook by name.

How do you say a Thanksgiving prayer at dinner?

Give people a moment to settle, invite them to join you, and keep it under thirty seconds once the food is on the table. Thank God for the meal, the people present, and the year behind you, mention those who are absent or in need, and end with a clear ‘Amen’.

What is the Catholic prayer for Thanksgiving dinner?

Most Catholic families use the traditional grace before meals: ‘Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.’ Many add a spontaneous sentence of thanks for the year and close with the Sign of the Cross.

What Bible verse is good for Thanksgiving?

Psalm 107:1 is the most widely used: ‘O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.’ Psalm 100:4, ‘Enter into his gates with thanksgiving’, and 1 Thessalonians 5:18, ‘In every thing give thanks’, are also common at the Thanksgiving table.

Grateful for the baby. Ready for the sleep.
