A Christmas prayer slows the whole day down for one breath: before the presents, before the plates are passed, before the kids race back to the tree. Below are original prayers for every part of the season, short enough to say with a baby on your hip and true enough to mean.

You will find short Christmas prayers, a Christmas prayer for family, a Christmas dinner prayer to say as grace, prayers for Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, simple prayers for kids, prayers for peace and for anyone missing a loved one this year, and Scripture to read aloud. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture.

Swap in names wherever it says ‘this family’ or ‘our home’. For a card or a photo caption instead, see our Christmas card messages and Christmas captions.

Short Christmas Prayers

One or two lines, for the car ride to church, the moment before the kids wake up, or a quiet minute by the tree.

Lord, thank You for coming to us small and quiet in a manger. Be born again in our home today. Amen.
God, in all the noise of this season, let me hear the one thing that matters: You are with us. Amen.
Jesus, You were once a baby in a mother’s arms. Bless every child and every tired parent tonight. Amen.
Father, let the lights on our tree remind us of the Light that came into the world. Amen.
Lord, slow us down. Let us notice each other before we notice the gifts. Amen.
God, fill this house with peace, patience, and enough joy to share. Amen.
Jesus, Prince of Peace, rest on every heart around this tree. Amen.
Lord, thank You for the greatest gift. Help us give love as freely as You gave it. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, slow us down. Let us notice each other before we notice the gifts. Amen.

Most families say the same thing every January: the season went by too fast. This one-line prayer asks for the thing that makes Christmas feel like Christmas, and children can learn it in a single morning.

A Christmas Prayer for Family

For the whole household, said together on Christmas Eve or at the start of Christmas Day.

Heavenly Father, thank You for this family and for one more Christmas together. Thank You for the ones who traveled far and the ones who never left. Bless the young and the old at this table, heal what needs healing between us, and let love be louder than any disagreement today. Keep us close to You and close to each other in the year ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Lord, You placed Your Son in a family: a young mother, a faithful father, a simple home. Bless our family with the same trust and tenderness. Make our home a place where Christ is welcome. Amen.
God, for the grandparents who taught us these traditions, the parents carrying them on, and the children who will carry them next, we give You thanks. Amen.
Father, some of us arrive tired, some worried, some grieving. Meet each one where they are today, and let this day be gentle with all of us. Amen.
Lord, bless the hands that cooked, wrapped, drove, and cleaned to make this day happen. Give them rest tonight. Amen.

Christmas Dinner Prayer

A Christmas dinner prayer is usually the one moment of the day when everyone is sitting still. Keep it short enough that the gravy stays warm.

Lord, bless this food, the hands that made it, and the people gathered to share it. On the day we celebrate Your Son’s birth, make us grateful for every gift, especially each other. Amen.
Father, thank You for this table full of food and this room full of family. Bless those who are not with us today, and bring them home safely next year. Amen.
God, as we eat together on this holy day, remind us of the One who was laid in a manger, a feeding trough, so that all of us could be fed. Amen.
Lord, for turkey and ham, for cookies and cousins, for laughter and leftovers, we give You thanks. Amen.
For a big, busy table. God, there are a lot of us and the food is getting cold, so we will keep this short: thank You for Christmas, thank You for each other, thank You for this meal. Amen.
For a small table this year. Lord, our table is quieter this Christmas. Thank You for the ones who are here and hold the ones who are far away. Bless this simple meal and this small, loved family. Amen.

Christmas Eve Prayers

Lord, on this holy night, quiet our home the way the hills of Bethlehem were quiet before the angels sang. Prepare our hearts to welcome You. Amen.
God, as the children try to fall asleep and the grownups finish wrapping, let peace settle over this house. Bless our rest and wake us with joy. Amen.
Father, tonight we light candles and sing the old songs. Thank You for the hope they carry, for us and for the whole world. Amen.
Jesus, You came on a night like this, to a family far from home. Be near every family that is far from home tonight. Amen.

Christmas Morning Prayers

Good morning, Lord, and happy birthday, Jesus. Before the first present is opened, we thank You for the gift of Yourself. Amen.
God, bless the excited children and the sleepy parents in this room. Let today be full of joy and short on tears. Amen.
Father, as we open gifts this morning, make us grateful receivers and generous givers, today and all year. Amen.
Lord, thank You for this Christmas morning. Whatever is under the tree, the people around it are the gift. Amen.

Start other days the same way with a morning prayer.

Simple Christmas Prayers for Kids

Short and easy to repeat, for little ones to say at the table, at bedtime, or by the manger scene.

Thank You, God, for baby Jesus, for Christmas lights, and for my family. Amen.
Dear Jesus, happy birthday! Thank You for loving me. Help me share my toys today. Amen.
God, bless the star, the shepherds, and the sheep, and bless my family while we sleep. Amen.
Dear God, thank You for presents and cookies and snow. Help me remember who Christmas is for. Amen.
Jesus, You were little once, just like me. Watch over all the children tonight. Amen.

For every other night of the year, see our bedtime prayers for kids and prayers for children.

Christmas Prayers for Peace and for Those Who Are Hurting

Christmas can be heavy for people carrying grief, illness, loneliness, or worry. These prayers make room for them at the table.

Lord, someone we love is missing from our table this year. Thank You for every Christmas we shared. Hold them close, and hold us while we miss them. Amen.
God, be with those who are sick, in the hospital, or working tonight so that others can be safe. Give them strength and moments of joy. Amen.
Prince of Peace, bring peace to places of war and to homes full of tension. Start with ours. Amen.
Father, for everyone spending Christmas alone, send a knock on the door, a phone call, a reminder that they are loved. Use us to send it. Amen.
Lord, for families stretched thin this year, provide what is needed and lift the worry from tired shoulders. Amen.

Bible Verses for Christmas

These Christmas verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain. Many families read Luke 2 aloud before opening presents.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.Luke 2:10 to 11 (KJV)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.Luke 2:14 (KJV)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.Matthew 1:23 (KJV)
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.John 1:5 (KJV)

How to Lead a Christmas Prayer at Home

Christmas is one of the few days many families pray together. In Pew Research Center’s holiday survey, 54 percent of Americans said they planned to attend Christmas Eve or Christmas Day services, compared with 36 percent who attend in a typical week, and 86 percent planned to gather with extended family or friends.

A simple plan for praying through Christmas Day.
  • Ask ahead. Give the person who will lead grace a heads up so they are not put on the spot.
  • Let a child go first. A short prayer from the youngest at the table is often the one people remember.
  • Name the absent. One sentence for those who could not come, or who have passed, means a lot to the people missing them.
  • Keep it short. Thirty seconds is plenty when the food is hot.

Christmas is also a hard week for baby sleep: late services, travel, and a house full of excited relatives. This is the baseline most families bring into the holidays, from Betteroo’s annual parent survey.
