A prayer for the new year is a way of closing one door gently and opening the next with God. Whether you say it at midnight with the kids asleep on the couch or on New Year’s morning over coffee, these original prayers give you words for gratitude, letting go, and hope.

Here you will find short new year prayers, a New Year’s Eve prayer, prayers for New Year’s Day, a new year prayer for family and for your children, prayers for a fresh start and for guidance, blessings to share with friends, and Bible verses for the new year. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture, and none of them are tied to a single year, so you can pray them for 2027 and every January after.

Short Prayers for the New Year

A short new year prayer fits on a sticky note on the fridge or in the first page of a new planner.

Lord, thank You for carrying us through last year. Walk ahead of us into this one. Amen.
God, this year is a mystery to me and no mystery to You. Hold it, and hold us. Amen.
Father, make this a year of slower mornings, kinder words, and more time together. Amen.
Lord, let me begin this year with a clean slate and a grateful heart. Amen.
Jesus, be the first thing I reach for every morning this year. Amen.
God, give me enough grace for each day, and remind me that each day is enough. Amen.
Father, take what I got wrong last year and teach me something from it. Amen.
Lord, bless this new year and everyone I love in it. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, thank You for carrying us through last year. Walk ahead of us into this one. Amen.

It holds both halves of a new year prayer in two sentences: thanks for what is behind, trust for what is ahead. It is easy enough for a child to say at midnight and honest enough for a hard year.

New Year’s Eve Prayer

For the last hour of the year, at midnight, or at a watch night service.

Heavenly Father, as this year ends, we thank You for every good gift it held: the birthdays and the ordinary Tuesdays, the answered prayers and the ones we are still waiting on. Forgive us where we fell short. Heal what still hurts. Carry us across midnight into a new year with You. Amen.
Lord, before the countdown starts, I give You this year, all of it. The parts I am proud of and the parts I would rather forget. Thank You for staying with me through every one. Amen.
God, as the clock turns, let this family turn toward You. Whatever happens next, may we face it together. Amen.
Father, bless everyone out tonight. Bring them home safely, and let the celebrations be joyful and kind. Amen.

New Year’s Day Prayers

Good morning, Lord. It is the first day of a new year, and the first thing I want to say is thank You. Amen.
God, this year is a blank page. Help us write it with patience, love, and faith. Amen.
Lord, as we take down the decorations and make our plans, keep our hearts set on what lasts. Amen.
Father, Your mercies are new every morning, even this one. Help me receive them, and pass them on. Amen.

Keep the habit going with a daily morning prayer.

A New Year Prayer for Family

To say together at the table on New Year’s Day, or to write in a family journal.

Lord, bless our family in the year ahead. Keep us healthy and keep us close. Give us more laughter at the table, more patience in the busy mornings, and more grace when we get on each other’s nerves. Let our home be a place where everyone feels safe and loved. Amen.
Father, for the new jobs, new schools, new babies, and new seasons this year will bring, prepare us and be with us. Amen.
God, help us put down our phones and pick up our conversations. Let this be a year we really see each other. Amen.
Lord, protect every member of this family: those under this roof and those far away. Bring us together often this year. Amen.
God, bless our marriage in this new year. Renew our friendship, soften our words, and remind us why we chose each other. Amen.

New Year Prayers for My Children

Lord, bless my children this year. Help them grow in wisdom and kindness, keep them safe at school and at play, and let them always know they are loved. Amen.
Father, my children will face new things this year: a new grade, new friends, new fears. Go with them into every room I cannot. Amen.
God, make me the parent my children need this year: patient on the long days, present on the short ones. Amen.
Lord, for my grown children, I ask for good work, good friends, and good choices. Draw them close to You. Amen.

More for your kids: our prayer for my son, prayer for my daughter, and prayers for adult children.

Prayers for a Fresh Start

Not every year ends well. If last year held a loss, a breakup, a diagnosis, or just too much, these prayers are for you.

Lord, last year was hard. I am not sure how I made it through, except that You held on to me. Give me hope for this one. Amen.
God, help me let go of what I cannot change and carry forward only what is good. Amen.
Father, heal the relationships that cracked last year. Where reconciliation is possible, give me courage. Where it is not, give me peace. Amen.
Lord, I am tired of starting over. Remind me that with You, a new start is a gift and not a failure. Amen.

Prayers for Guidance and New Year Goals

Father, before I make a single resolution, help me ask what You want this year to be about. Amen.
Lord, give me wisdom with my time, my money, and my words this year. Amen.
God, help me build habits that last longer than January: rest, prayer, and kindness to myself and others. Amen.
Lord, when I break a resolution, and I will, give me grace to begin again the next morning. Amen.

New Year Blessings to Share

Short blessings for a text, a card, or a social post on January 1.

May this new year bring you peace in the mornings, joy in the evenings, and God’s presence in every hour between.
May the Lord bless your home, your health, and your heart this year.
Praying that this is the year your waiting turns to celebrating.
May every day of this new year remind you how loved you are.

Bible Verses for the New Year

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain. Lamentations 3:22 to 23 is a favorite for the first morning of the year.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 to 23 (KJV)
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.Isaiah 43:18 to 19 (KJV)
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.Philippians 3:13 to 14 (KJV)
Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.Psalm 65:11 (KJV)
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.Psalm 90:12 (KJV)

How to Pray Through the New Year

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study. January is a natural time to start or restart the habit. A little structure helps.

A simple plan for praying into a new year.
  • Pick a word. Many families choose one word for the year, such as peace, patience, or home, and pray it often.
  • Keep a prayer list. Write requests in the back of your planner and mark the answers as they come.
  • Pray with your kids at bedtime. One sentence each is enough to make it a habit.
  • Start small. One minute a day you actually keep beats an hour you skip.

For many parents, the real new year resolution is more sleep. This is the starting line for most families, from Betteroo’s annual parent survey.
