A night prayer is a way of setting the day down. Whatever got finished, whatever did not, whatever you are still turning over at 11 pm, you hand it over, give thanks, ask for protection over the people you love, and let yourself rest.

Below are 40 night prayers organised by what you actually need tonight: short ones for when you are too tired to think, powerful prayers for protection over your home, prayers for your family and children, and honest ones for the nights when sleep will not come and worry will not stop.

Some are classic evening prayers that people have said for centuries. Others are written plainly for modern nights. Use them word for word, or let them give you a place to start and then say the rest in your own words. There is no wrong way to do this.

Short Night Prayers for When You Are Too Tired

Some nights you have nothing left. These are deliberately short, a few seconds each, and they still count. A prayer does not need length to be sincere.

Lord, the day is done. Thank You for carrying it. Now carry me into sleep. Amen.
Father, I am tired. Hold what I cannot hold tonight. Amen.
God, thank You for today. Keep us through the night. Amen.
Lord, quiet my mind, guard my home, and give me rest. Amen.
Into Your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.Psalm 31:5
Jesus, I give You this night. Whatever comes, You are already there. Amen.
Lord, I have done what I could today. The rest is Yours. Amen.
Peace, Lord. For this house, for these people, for this night. Amen.

If you only say one tonight

Lord, the day is done. Thank You for carrying it. Now carry me into sleep. Amen. Nine seconds, and it does the whole job: gratitude, handover, rest.

Classic Evening Prayers

These have been said at bedsides for hundreds of years. They are worn smooth by use, which is exactly what a tired mind wants. Most are in the public domain and belong to everyone now.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
May angels watch me through the night,
And wake me with the morning light. Amen.Traditional, 18th century
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give Your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, rest the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, shield the joyous; and all for Your love’s sake. Amen.Book of Common Prayer, Compline
Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in Your mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.Attributed to John Henry Newman
I thank You, my heavenly Father, that You have graciously kept me this day. Forgive me all my sins, and graciously keep me this night. Into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Amen.Martin Luther’s Evening Prayer
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.Numbers 6:24 to 26
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8

Powerful Night Prayers for Protection

When people search for a powerful night prayer, they usually mean a prayer for protection: over the house, over the children asleep down the hall, over whatever is coming tomorrow. These are written for that.

Lord, place Your protection over this house tonight. Over every door, every window, every room where someone I love is sleeping. Let nothing disturb their rest. Let us wake tomorrow whole and safe. Amen.
Father, be a wall around this family tonight. Guard our bodies while we sleep, guard our minds from fear, and guard our hearts from what we cannot control. We rest because You do not. Amen.
God, I cannot watch over everyone I love while I sleep. You can. I hand each of them to You by name tonight, and I trust You with them until morning. Amen.
Lord, cover this home with peace. Send away every fear that grows louder at night. Let Your presence be the last thing we know tonight and the first thing we know tomorrow. Amen.
He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.Psalm 91:4
Lord, keep watch over the ones who cannot sleep tonight: the frightened, the grieving, the ones sitting up with a sick child. Meet them where they are. Amen.

Night Prayers for Your Family

Praying for a family at night is usually less about eloquence and more about naming people. Say the names out loud. It changes how the prayer feels.

Lord, bless every person under this roof tonight. Where there was friction today, bring forgiveness. Where there was worry, bring peace. Let us wake gentler with each other than we were today. Amen.
Father, thank You for this family. Not a perfect one, but mine. Keep us close, keep us kind, and keep us safe through the night. Amen.
God, watch over my children while they sleep. Guard their bodies, settle their dreams, and grow them into who You made them to be. Give me the patience they will need from me tomorrow. Amen.
Lord, be with the family members who are far from us tonight, and with the ones we are not speaking to. Hold them too. Amen.
Jesus, we hand You this house. The dishes we did not do, the conversation we did not finish, the child who took three hours to settle. All of it. Goodnight, Lord. Amen.
As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.Joshua 24:15

Night Prayers for Anxious, Sleepless Nights

Some nights the body is exhausted and the mind will not stop. These prayers do not pretend that is easy, and they do not promise the worry will vanish. They give you somewhere to put it.

Lord, my body is tired and my mind will not stop. I cannot solve this at 2 am. Take it from me until morning, when I will have the strength to look at it properly. Amen.
God, I keep replaying today. Help me set it down. What is done is done, and You are not finished with me. Amen.
Father, the house is quiet and everything feels louder. Sit with me. I do not need answers tonight, just company. Amen.
Lord, I am afraid of things that may never happen. Bring me back to tonight, to this bed, to this breath. You are here. Amen.
Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.1 Peter 5:7
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
Lord, if I am awake again tonight, let the hours be useful. Let me pray instead of spiral. Amen.

If sleeplessness has become a pattern rather than a bad week, it is worth treating as a health matter as well as a spiritual one. Persistent insomnia responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, and your doctor is the right person to raise it with.

Night Prayers for Exhausted Parents

There is a specific tiredness to parenting a small child, and most prayer books were not written with it in mind. These were.

Lord, I gave everything I had today and it still did not feel like enough. Meet me in the gap. Amen.
Father, I was not the parent I wanted to be today. Thank You that tomorrow is genuinely new. Amen.
God, if the baby wakes tonight, give me patience I have not earned and do not currently possess. Amen.
Lord, thank You for this child, even at 3 am. Especially at 3 am, when I need reminding. Amen.
Jesus, I am so tired. That is the whole prayer. Amen.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.Isaiah 40:29

A note for the 3 am wake-ups

If you are praying through night wakings most nights, you are not doing anything wrong spiritually. Frequent waking is usually developmental or a sleep-association pattern, and it is fixable. Prayer and a sleep plan are not in competition.

How to Build a Night Prayer Habit That Lasts

The prayers people actually keep saying are short, attached to something they already do, and forgiving about being missed.

  • Attach it to an existing cue. Lights off, head on pillow, phone on the charger. The cue does the remembering so you do not have to.
  • Keep it short enough to say when exhausted. A prayer you can manage on your worst night is worth more than one you only manage on your best.
  • Say it out loud if you can. Even a whisper. Silent prayers wander; spoken ones tend to stay put.
  • Use the same words for a while. Repetition is not laziness. Familiar words free your attention for the actual praying.
  • Name people specifically. Not ‘bless my family’ but each name in turn.
  • Miss a night without guilt. Skipping does not reset anything. Start again tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good night prayer to say before bed?

A good night prayer usually does four things: gives thanks for the day, hands over what you cannot control, asks protection for the people you love, and asks for rest. A short version that covers all four: ‘Lord, the day is done. Thank You for carrying it. Guard this house tonight, and give me rest. Amen.’

What is the most powerful night prayer for protection?

Prayers described as powerful are usually prayers of protection over a home and family. Psalm 91 is the passage most often used, particularly ‘He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.’ A plain spoken version works just as well: ask for protection over each room and each person by name.

What is a short prayer to say at night?

‘Into Your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit’ from Psalm 31:5 is among the shortest and oldest. Modern equivalents work too, such as ‘Father, I am tired. Hold what I cannot hold tonight. Amen.’ A prayer does not need length to be sincere, and a short prayer you actually say beats a long one you skip.

Is there a difference between a night prayer and an evening prayer?

In everyday use they mean the same thing. In liturgical traditions there is a distinction: evening prayer, sometimes called vespers, is said as the day ends, while night prayer, or compline, is the final prayer before sleep. For most people praying at home, the two are interchangeable.

Can I pray at night if I do not know the right words?

Yes. There are no required words. Naming what happened, what you are grateful for, and what you are worried about is a complete prayer. Written prayers are useful mainly as a starting point on nights when your own words will not come.

When prayer is said and the baby still wakes at 2 am

Betteroo builds a gentle, personalized sleep plan around your child’s actual age and temperament. Takes about three minutes to find your starting point.
