Praying for your children is different from praying with them. This is the prayer you say after the door is closed, when you are the only one awake and the whole weight of wanting good things for them lands at once.

Below are 35 prayers to pray over your children, organised by what you are actually asking for: protection, health, character, school and friendship, and the hard seasons that come to every family eventually.

They work for a newborn, a teenager, or a grown child living three states away. Change the words freely. The only part that really matters is saying their name.

Short Prayers for Children

Short enough to say in a doorway on the way past.

Lord, keep my child safe today, and close to You. Amen.
Father, bless this child. Guard them, guide them, grow them. Amen.
God, thank You for this child. Help me raise them well. Amen.
Lord, be with them where I cannot be. Amen.
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him.Psalm 127:3
Father, whatever today holds for them, go ahead of them into it. Amen.
Lord, let them know they are loved, by me and by You. Amen.

If you only say one tonight

Lord, be with them where I cannot be. Amen. It names the actual fear underneath most parental prayer, which is that you cannot be everywhere.

Prayers for a Child’s Protection

The most common prayer parents pray, and the one that gets harder as children get older and further away.

Lord, put Your protection around my child today. In the car, in the playground, in the places I will never see. Bring them home to me. Amen.
Father, guard their body, their mind, and their heart. Keep them from harm and from the kind of hurt that leaves a mark. Amen.
God, I cannot follow them everywhere and I am not meant to. Go where I cannot. Amen.
Lord, protect them from people who would do them harm, and give them the instinct to walk away. Amen.
For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.Psalm 91:11
Father, when they are out of my sight tonight, let them be in Yours. Amen.
Lord, keep them safe online as well as outside. Give them wisdom about what they see and who they talk to. Amen.

Prayers for a Child’s Health

For ordinary illnesses and for the frightening ones.

Lord, my child is unwell and I feel useless. Bring healing to their body and steadiness to mine. Amen.
Father, be with them tonight through the fever. Cool it, ease it, and let them sleep. Amen.
God, guide the doctors caring for my child. Give them clear eyes and steady hands. Amen.
Lord, thank You for a healthy child. I do not take a single ordinary day of it for granted. Amen.
Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved.Jeremiah 17:14
Father, for the long diagnosis we are learning to live with: give us endurance, and give them a full life inside it. Amen.

Prayers for a Child’s Character

Arguably the prayers that matter longest, and the hardest ones to pray honestly, because they usually convict the parent saying them.

Lord, grow kindness in my child. Not politeness, actual kindness, the sort that costs something. Amen.
Father, give them courage to do right when it is unpopular and no one is watching. Amen.
God, make them honest, even when honesty is expensive. Amen.
Lord, let them be the child who notices the one left out. Amen.
Father, give them a forgiving heart, and let them learn it by being forgiven, starting with me. Amen.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6
Lord, let them like who they are. Amen.

Prayers for School and Friendship

For the parts of a child’s life that happen entirely without you.

Lord, go with them into school today. Give them one good friend and one good moment. Amen.
Father, be with my child if they eat lunch alone today. Send someone kind to sit down. Amen.
God, give them teachers who see them properly. Amen.
Lord, help them work hard and hold their results lightly. Let them know they are more than their marks. Amen.
Father, protect them from cruelty, and keep them from being cruel. Both. Amen.
Lord, when they fail at something, let it teach them rather than shrink them. Amen.

How to Pray for Your Children Consistently

Most parents intend to pray for their children daily and manage it in bursts. The parents who keep it going almost always have a system rather than better intentions, and the systems are unglamorous.

  • Attach it to a fixed moment. The school run, the bedroom door at night, the walk back from the bus stop. The moment triggers the prayer so willpower does not have to.
  • Pray one child per day if you have several. Trying to cover everyone every night usually means covering no one properly.
  • Keep a short written list of what you are asking for each child right now. It stops the prayer drifting into vague blessing and shows you what has been answered.
  • Pray in the room while they sleep if the relationship is strained. It is often easier to pray over a sleeping teenager than to talk to a waking one.
  • Pray about your own parenting too, not only about them. The prayers that change a household most often start with the adult.
  • Let missed days go. A habit that survives being broken is worth more than one that collapses the first time it is interrupted.

It also helps to vary what you ask for. Parents naturally default to safety, and safety is worth praying for, but a child who is only ever prayed safe is being prayed smaller than they were made. Character, courage, friendship, and purpose deserve the same airtime.

What to Pray at Different Ages

The same child needs very different prayers at four and at fourteen. What follows is a rough guide rather than a rule.

StageWhat tends to matter most
Baby and toddlerPhysical safety, sleep, your own patience and stamina
PreschoolKindness, language, early friendships, separation and settling
Primary schoolConfidence, one good friend, fair treatment, resilience after failure
Early teensIdentity, belonging, wisdom about who they follow, online safety
Late teensDirection, courage to choose well, protection in new freedom
Adult childrenTheir marriage, work and health, and your own letting go
How prayers for a child tend to shift with age.

Notice the last row. The move from praying for a child to praying for an adult is the hardest transition most parents make, because the prayers stay urgent while the influence disappears. If your children are grown, our guide to prayers for adult children is written for exactly that stage.

When Praying Is Hard

There are seasons when praying for your children feels mechanical, or when you are too angry, too tired, or too disappointed to mean it. That is normal, and it is not a sign that something has gone wrong with your faith.

Two things help. The first is permission to pray badly: a resentful, one-line, half-meant prayer still counts, and most long prayer habits are mostly made of those. The second is to pray honestly about the situation rather than about the version you wish you were in. Praying ‘I do not like my child today’ is more useful than praying nothing, and considerably more honest than pretending.

If you are struggling more than usual

Persistent low mood, hopelessness, or dread about parenting are worth raising with a doctor as well as in prayer. Postpartum and parental mental health conditions are common, treatable, and not a spiritual failing.

Prayers for the Hard Seasons

For the stretches when parenting is mostly difficult, and for the older-child seasons that nobody warns you about.

Lord, I do not like my child very much today, and I love them completely. Hold both of those. Amen.
Father, we are not speaking properly at the moment and I do not know how to fix it. Make a way back. Amen.
God, my child is making choices that frighten me. I cannot control this. Keep them alive and keep the door open. Amen.
Lord, I lost my temper today and I saw their face change. Forgive me, and let the repair go deeper than the damage. Amen.
Father, for my grown child who lives far away: be the presence I cannot be. Amen.
Lord, give me the patience I do not have and cannot manufacture. Amen.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.Galatians 6:9

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good prayer for my child?

A good prayer for a child names them specifically and asks for protection, health, and character rather than only for things to go smoothly. A short version: ‘Lord, keep my child safe today, close to You, and kind to others. Be with them where I cannot be. Amen.’

What is a powerful prayer of protection for a child?

Psalm 91:11 is the passage most often prayed over children: ‘For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.’ Spoken plainly, protection prayers usually name the specific places a child will be that day and ask for God to be there in the parent’s absence.

How do I pray for my child every day?

Attach it to something you already do, such as the school run, the bedroom door at night, or the moment you turn off their light. Keep it short enough to manage on a bad day, and use their name. Consistency matters far more than length or eloquence.

Can I pray for my adult children?

Yes, and many parents find they pray more for grown children than they did for small ones, because the worries get larger and the control gets smaller. Prayers for adult children usually focus on protection, wisdom in decisions, and keeping the relationship open.

What do I pray when my child is going through something I cannot fix?

Pray honestly rather than tidily. Naming that you are frightened and cannot fix it is a complete prayer. Something like: ‘God, I cannot control this. Keep them safe and keep the door open between us.’ Prayers do not have to resolve to be real.
