A prayer for my grandchildren is the one gift I can give them every day, from any distance, at any age. I cannot make their choices for them or be there for every scraped knee. I can put their names in front of God each morning and trust Him with the rest.

This page gathers original prayers for grandchildren through every stage: short daily prayers, a prayer for grandchildren’s protection, prayers for a new or unborn grandbaby, for their health, school, faith, and character, for grandkids who live far away, for teenagers and grown grandchildren, and for the seasons when a family is hurting.

Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is marked as Scripture. Put each child’s name wherever it says ‘my grandchildren’. For prayers written from a parent’s point of view, see our prayers for children and prayers for adult children.

Short Prayers for My Grandchildren

A short prayer for my grandchildren is one I can say while the kettle boils. Say it by name, one grandchild at a time, and it becomes a daily habit that takes less than a minute.

Lord, bless my grandchildren today. Keep them safe, keep them kind, and keep them close to You. Amen.
God, thank You for each of my grandchildren. Let them feel loved today, by their family and by You. Amen.
Father, watch over my grandbabies where I cannot. Be the hand that steadies them. Amen.
Lord, I place every one of my grandchildren in Your care this morning. Go with them wherever they go. Amen.
God, give my grandchildren good friends, wise teachers, and a happy heart today. Amen.
Jesus, let my grandchildren grow up knowing they are never alone and never unloved. Amen.
Lord, bless the little ones who call me Grandma. I love them more than I can say, and You love them more than that. Amen.
Father, cover my grandchildren with Your peace tonight and wake them with Your joy tomorrow. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, bless my grandchildren today. Keep them safe, keep them kind, and keep them close to You. Amen.

Safety, character, and faith are the three things nearly every grandparent asks for. This prayer covers all of them in one breath, and it is short enough to pray for each grandchild by name.

Prayer for Grandchildren’s Protection

The world my grandchildren are growing up in is not the one I grew up in. A prayer for grandchildren’s protection asks God to stand in the places a grandparent cannot reach.

Heavenly Father, I ask for Your protection over my grandchildren. Guard them at home, at school, on the road, and on the playground. Keep accidents and illness far from them. Put a hedge around their bodies, their minds, and their hearts, and bring each of them safely home tonight. Amen.
Lord, protect my grandchildren from people who would harm them and from influences that would mislead them. Give them a quick sense for what is wrong and the courage to walk away from it. Amen.
God, guard what my grandchildren see and hear. So much reaches them through a screen that never reached me. Keep their minds clean, their hearts tender, and their childhood unhurried. Amen.
Father, send Your angels to watch over my grandchildren while they sleep. Let no fear find them in the dark, and let them wake up rested and glad. Amen.
Lord, when my grandchildren are afraid, be near. When they are in danger, be quick. When they are lost, be the one who finds them. Amen.

For a traditional prayer of protection to teach them, see our guardian angel prayer page.

Prayers for a New or Unborn Grandchild

Few things turn a person to prayer like the news that a grandbaby is coming. These are for the months of waiting and the first weeks at home.

For an unborn grandchild. Lord, You already know this little one I have not met. Form them carefully. Keep their mother healthy and strong, and bring this baby safely into our arms. Amen.
For the day of the birth. Father, be in that delivery room. Guide the doctors and nurses, calm my child, and let the first sound we hear be a strong, healthy cry. Amen.
For a newborn grandchild. God, thank You for this brand-new life. Bless these tiny hands and feet. Let this baby grow strong, sleep peacefully, and be surrounded by love every day. Amen.
For the new parents. Lord, my child is a parent now, and so tired. Give them patience at 3 am, confidence when they doubt themselves, and tenderness toward each other. Show me how to help without taking over. Amen.
For a grandbaby in the NICU. Father, this little one is so small, and the machines are so loud. Strengthen every breath and every heartbeat. Hold the parents up, and bring this baby home. Amen.

If you are helping with the night shift, you already know how short sleep is in a house with a new baby. These are the numbers from Betteroo’s annual survey of parents.

Prayers for My Grandchildren’s Faith and Character

Most grandparents want one thing above the others: that their grandchildren will know God for themselves. These prayers ask for faith and for the kind of character that shows it.

Lord, more than success and more than comfort, I ask that my grandchildren would know You. Draw each of them to Yourself early, and never let them wander far. Amen.
Father, let the faith in this family not stop with me. Carry it into my grandchildren and into the children they will one day have. Amen.
God, make my grandchildren honest when lying is easier, kind when it costs them, and brave when they stand alone. Amen.
Lord, give my grandchildren soft hearts toward people who are left out. Let them be the ones who make room at the table. Amen.
Father, help me live in a way that makes faith look like good news to my grandchildren. Let them see You in how I treat people. Amen.

Prayers for My Grandchildren’s Health and School

For checkups and fevers, first days and final exams.

Lord, I pray for my grandchildren’s health. Strengthen their growing bodies, protect them from sickness, and give them energy to run and play. Amen.
For a sick grandchild. Father, my grandchild is unwell, and I would trade places if I could. Bring the fever down, guide the doctors, and comfort this child tonight. Give the parents rest and steady nerves. Amen.
For school. God, go with my grandchildren into the classroom. Help them listen, learn, and try again when it is hard. Give them a teacher who sees the best in them. Amen.
For friendships. Lord, give my grandchildren one true friend this year. Guard them from bullies and from becoming one. Amen.
For a grandchild who struggles. Father, You made this child exactly as they are. Where learning is hard or making friends is harder, give extra grace. Let them never mistake a struggle for a lack of worth. Amen.

Prayers for Grandchildren Who Live Far Away

Distance is the ordinary condition of grandparenting now. AARP counts about 70 million grandparents in the United States, and in its Grandparents Today National Survey more than half had at least one grandchild living more than 200 miles away. Prayer does not need a plane ticket.

Lord, my grandchildren are far from me, and they are not far from You. Be near them today in every way I wish I could be. Amen.
Father, do not let the miles make us strangers. Help my grandchildren remember my voice and my love between visits. Amen.
God, bless every video call, every letter, and every package I send. Let love travel well. Amen.
Lord, bring us together soon. Until then, keep my grandchildren safe, and keep a place for me in their hearts. Amen.

Prayers for Teenage and Grown Grandchildren

Grandchildren keep needing prayer long after they stop needing a hand to cross the street.

For a teenager. Lord, my grandchild is becoming their own person, and the world is loud with opinions. Give them a clear mind, good friends, and the confidence to be who You made them. Amen.
For big decisions. Father, guide my grandchildren as they choose a school, a job, and a path. Open the right doors, close the wrong ones, and give them peace about the difference. Amen.
For a grandchild leaving home. God, go with my grandchild into this new place. Give them wisdom, good company, and a reason to call home. Amen.
For a grandchild who has drifted from faith. Lord, You have not let go of this child, and neither will I. I will not lecture. I will love and I will pray. Bring them home in Your time. Amen.

Prayers for Grandchildren in Hard Seasons

Some prayers are said through tears. According to AARP, about one in ten grandparents lives in the same household as a grandchild, and about 5% are a grandchild’s primary caregiver. Whatever your family is facing, these prayers were written for it.

When their parents are divorcing. Father, my grandchildren’s home is splitting in two. Shield their hearts. Let them know none of this is their fault, and make my house a place where nothing has changed. Amen.
For a grandparent raising grandchildren. Lord, I did not expect to be packing lunches again at my age. Give me strength for the days and sleep for the nights. Heal what these children have been through, and help me be what they need. Amen.
When I am kept from them. God, I cannot see my grandchildren right now, and it breaks my heart. Guard them, soften what has gone hard in this family, and make a way back. Until then, hear the prayers I cannot say to their faces. Amen.
For a grandchild who is grieving. Lord, my grandchild has lost someone and is too young to carry it. Carry it for them. Give me simple, true words and plenty of time to sit close. Amen.
For a grandchild in trouble. Father, my grandchild has made a choice that frightens me. Do not let one mistake define a whole life. Send the right person at the right moment, and let them know my door is open. Amen.

Bible Verses to Pray Over My Grandchildren

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain. Read one aloud with a grandchild’s name in mind.

Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.Proverbs 17:6 (KJV)
Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.Psalm 71:18 (KJV)
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.Numbers 6:24 to 26 (KJV)
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:7 to 8 (KJV)

How to Pray for Your Grandchildren Every Day

About 44% of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s most recent Religious Landscape Study. A daily prayer for grandchildren does not have to be long. One focus a day keeps it specific, and a specific prayer is easier to keep praying.

A one week rhythm for praying over your grandchildren, one focus a day.
  • Pray by name. Keep a list on the fridge or a photo of each grandchild by your chair, and pray for them one at a time.
  • Ask them. ‘What can Grandma pray about for you this week?’ gets real answers from a six year old, and sometimes from a sixteen year old.
  • Pray with them when you can. A short blessing at bedtime during a visit is something children remember.
  • Write one down. A prayer tucked into a birthday card may be read again decades from now.
