A Father’s Day prayer is a simple way to thank God for the dads in your life and ask Him to strengthen them for the road ahead. Whether you are praying for your own father, your husband, a brand new dad, or a grandfather, these prayers give you words to bless the men who show up for their families every day.

Below you will find short Father’s Day prayers, a prayer for my dad, a blessing for new fathers, a prayer for husbands on Father’s Day, a prayer for grandfathers and step dads, a Father’s Day prayer for church, a gentle prayer for those who find the day hard, and Bible verses for Father’s Day. Every prayer here is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture.

Looking for verses to read aloud? Our Bible verses about fathers page gathers them in one place, and our Father’s Day messages help with the card.

Short Father’s Day Prayers

Short prayers are easy to say over breakfast, write in a card, or whisper before the family heads to church.

Lord, thank You for the fathers who show up. Bless them with strength today and rest tonight. Amen.
God, bless my dad. Thank You for every lesson he taught me without saying a word. Amen.
Father in heaven, guide the fathers on earth. Make them patient, brave, and kind. Amen.
Lord, on this Father’s Day, let every dad feel seen, thanked, and deeply loved. Amen.
Jesus, give the dads in my life wisdom for the hard days and joy for the ordinary ones. Amen.
God, thank You for the gift of a father’s love, and for being the Father who never leaves. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Heavenly Father, thank You for the dads who get up early, stay up late, and carry more than they say. Give them Your strength when theirs runs low, and let them hear today how loved they are. Amen.

This Father’s Day prayer works at the breakfast table, in a card, or at the start of a church service. It thanks God for dads and asks Him to carry what they carry.

Prayer for My Dad on Father’s Day

Lord, thank You for my dad. Thank You for the rides, the advice, the quiet sacrifices, and the love he showed in a hundred small ways. Bless his health, his work, and his heart. Let him know today how grateful I am. Amen.
God, my father is not perfect, and neither am I. Thank You for the good he gave me. Heal what needs healing between us, and help me honor him well. Amen.
Father, as my dad grows older, protect his body and mind. Give him peace, purpose, and many more years with the people who love him. Amen.
Lord, bless my dad with rest this Father’s Day. Let him put his feet up and feel how much he is loved. Amen.

A Blessing for New Fathers

A first Father’s Day is full of joy and exhaustion. These prayers are for the brand new dad, from his partner, his parents, or his church family.

Lord, bless this new father. When the nights are long, give him patience. When he feels unsure, give him confidence. When he holds his child, let him feel Your love holding him. Amen.
God, thank You for making him a dad. Teach him to be gentle with his baby and gentle with himself. Amen.
Father, give this new dad rest in the short hours he has, strength for the feedings and the rocking, and joy in every small first. Amen.
Lord, help him and his partner work as one team. Protect their home, their sleep, and their love for each other. Amen.

Prayer and care go together

New dads can struggle too. A widely cited meta-analysis in JAMA found that about 1 in 10 fathers experience depression between pregnancy and the baby’s first year. If a new father seems withdrawn, irritable, or not himself for more than a couple of weeks, encourage him to talk with his doctor. In a crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time.

If your son just became a dad, our new happy Father’s Day to my son messages pair well with this blessing.

Father’s Day Prayer for My Husband

Lord, thank You for my husband and the father he is to our children. Bless his work, his rest, and his heart. Help me notice and thank him for all he does. Amen.
God, give my husband wisdom to lead our family with love, patience to listen well, and a good laugh at the end of a long day. Amen.
Father, when my husband feels tired or doubts himself as a dad, remind him that our children adore him and that You are with him. Amen.

For everyday prayers, see our prayer for my husband, and for the card, happy Father’s Day to my husband.

Prayer for Grandfathers and Step Dads

For grandfathers

Lord, thank You for grandfathers who pass down faith, stories, and steady love. Bless their health and let them see their family’s love today. Amen.
God, thank You for my grandpa’s patience and his pocketful of time. Keep him well and close to us for many years. Amen.

For step dads and bonus dads

Lord, bless the men who chose to love children they did not have to. Reward their faithfulness and grow trust in their homes. Amen.
God, thank You for the step dad in our family. Give him patience, give our children open hearts, and bless the family we are building together. Amen.

Our step dad quotes have more words for bonus dads.

Father’s Day Prayer for Church

A congregational blessing a pastor or leader can read aloud, with fathers standing if they wish.

Heavenly Father, we lift up the fathers among us today. Thank You for the dads, grandfathers, step dads, foster dads, and the men who mentor and coach. Give them wisdom to lead, humility to listen, and courage to love well. Where they are tired, renew them. Where they have fallen short, give them grace and a fresh start. Bless their homes and their children, and let them reflect Your faithful love. We also hold before You those for whom this day is tender: those missing a father, those hoping to become one, and those whose relationship with their dad is hard. Meet each one with Your comfort. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord, bless every father in this room. May their strength be gentle, their words be true, and their homes be full of peace. Amen.

A Gentle Prayer for Those Who Find Father’s Day Hard

Father’s Day is not easy for everyone. If you are missing your dad, longing to be a father, or carrying a complicated relationship, this prayer is for you.

Lord, today is tender. Hold me where I hurt. Thank You that You are a Father who never leaves, never forgets, and never stops loving me. Comfort me with Your nearness, and give me peace for today. Amen.
God, for the dad I am missing, thank You for the love he gave. Let his memory be a blessing in our family. Amen.

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain. They are lovely to read before a Father’s Day prayer or write inside a card.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.Psalms 103:13 (KJV)
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.Proverbs 23:24 (KJV)
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.Proverbs 4:1 (KJV)

How to Use a Father’s Day Prayer

  • Pray it at the table. A short prayer before the Father’s Day meal sets a grateful tone.
  • Write it in the card. A one-line blessing under your note means a lot.
  • Personalize it. Add his name and one thing you are thankful for.
  • Lay a hand on his shoulder. Praying over a dad, especially a new one, is a powerful gift.
  • Remember the hurting. In church, a line for those missing a father makes the day kinder for everyone.
