A prayer for safe delivery of baby is one of the most heartfelt prayers there is. Whether labor is weeks away, contractions have started, or you are praying for a friend in the delivery room right now, these original prayers are written for every stage of birth.

Below you will find short prayers for labor and delivery, prayers for the final weeks, prayers during contractions, prayers for a C-section or induction, a prayer for safe delivery of baby for a friend, prayers for a partner in the delivery room, a prayer for baby protection at birth, prayers of thanks after the birth of baby, and verses of courage. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as Scripture.

Short Prayers for Safe Delivery

Lord, bring this baby safely into the world and keep mother and child well. Amen.
God, give me strength for every contraction and peace between them. Amen.
Father, guide the hands of everyone in the delivery room today. Amen.
Jesus, be with me in labor. I will not do this alone. Amen.
Lord, protect my baby through every moment of birth. Amen.
God, today is the day. Carry us both through it. Amen.
Father, I trust You with this birth and with this baby. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, bring this baby safely into the world and keep mother and child well. Amen.

In labor there is no room for long prayers. This one is simple enough to repeat through contractions or text to a friend, and it asks for the two things that matter most: a safe baby and a well mother.

Prayers for the Final Weeks Before Delivery

The last weeks of pregnancy are full of waiting, aches, and nerves. If you are not sure whether it is the real thing, our guides to signs labor is 24 to 48 hours away, prodromal labor, and early vs active labor can help.

Lord, my due date is close and I am ready and not ready at the same time. Prepare my body, calm my mind, and help my baby get into the right position. Let labor begin at the right time. Amen.
Father, as I pack the hospital bag and wash the tiny clothes, I pray for a smooth delivery and a healthy baby. Amen.
God, I am afraid of the pain and of what could go wrong. Replace my fear with trust. Remind me that You will be in the room. Amen.
Jesus, give me good sleep in these last nights, as much as my belly will allow. Amen.

Prayers During Labor and Delivery

Short enough to say between contractions, or for a partner to say aloud.

Lord, with this contraction, give me strength. With this breath, give me peace. Amen.
God, every wave brings my baby closer. Help me ride it. Amen.
Father, I am tired. Lend me Your strength for the next push. Amen.
Jesus, keep my baby’s heartbeat strong and steady. Amen.
Holy Spirit, fill this room with calm. Guide the midwife and the doctor. Amen.
Lord, I can do hard things because You are with me. Amen.

Prayer for a C-Section or Induction

For a C-section. Lord, I am going into surgery to meet my baby. Guide the surgeon’s hands, keep my body safe, and bring my baby out healthy and crying. Help me heal well afterward. Amen.
For an emergency C-section. God, this is not the plan I made, but You are still here. Protect my baby and me right now. Give the team speed and skill. Amen.
For an induction. Father, my body needs some help to begin. Let the induction work gently and well, and keep my baby comfortable through it. Give me patience in the waiting. Amen.

Prayer for Safe Delivery of Baby for a Friend

A prayer for safe delivery of baby for a friend is one of the kindest messages you can send when she goes into labor. Copy one and add her name.

Praying for you right now! May God give you strength for every contraction, peace in your heart, and a safe delivery of your sweet baby.
Lord, my friend is in labor today. Be with her in the delivery room, guide her care team, and bring her baby safely into her arms. Amen.
Thinking of you and praying for a smooth labor, a healthy baby, and a quick recovery. You have got this, and God has you.
For a daughter in labor. Father, my baby is having a baby. Hold her through this birth, keep my grandchild safe, and let me hear good news soon. Amen.
For a sister in labor. God, protect my sister and her baby today. Give her courage and give her doctors wisdom. Amen.

Prayers for a Partner in the Delivery Room

Lord, help me be strong for her. Show me when to hold her hand, when to speak, and when to stay quiet. Protect my wife and our baby. Amen.
God, I feel helpless watching her in pain. Give her strength I cannot give, and give me calm so I can support her. Amen.

Prayer for Baby Protection at Birth

A prayer for baby protection asks God to watch over your little one through the journey of birth and the first breath.

Lord, protect this baby through the birth canal and into the light. Give them a strong first breath, a loud first cry, and healthy lungs and heart. Amen.
Father, cover this baby with Your protection in the delivery room and in the nursery. Keep them safe from infection and harm. Amen.
God, the moment my baby is born, let them feel safe in my arms and safe in Yours. Amen.

Prayers of Thanks After the Birth of Baby

Lord, our baby is here! Thank You for a safe delivery, for this healthy little one, and for carrying me through. Amen.
Father, thank You for every nurse, doctor, and midwife who helped bring our baby into the world. Bless them today. Amen.
God, my body did something amazing today. Help it heal, and help me rest. Amen.
Jesus, the waiting is over and the joy has come. Thank You. Amen.

Bible Verses for Labor and Delivery

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.John 16:21 (KJV)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1 (KJV)
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6 to 7 (KJV)

Prayer and Good Care Go Together

Prayer is a source of strength in labor, not a replacement for medical care. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises calling your ob-gyn or other obstetric care provider if you think you are in labor or are not sure, and if your water breaks. The CDC’s Hear Her campaign lists urgent warning signs during and after pregnancy, including heavy bleeding, a severe headache that will not go away, changes in vision, trouble breathing, chest pain, and your baby moving less. If you notice any of these, get medical care right away.

Pack this with your hospital bag

Write your favorite short prayer on an index card and tuck it in your bag, or save it on your phone’s lock screen. When labor gets intense, you or your partner can read it without having to think.

How to Pray Through Labor

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study. During labor, prayer works best when it is short and repeatable.

Matching prayers to the stages of labor.
  • Choose one line ahead of time. In active labor you will not want to think of words.
  • Ask your partner to pray aloud. Hearing it can be calming.
  • Set up a prayer chain. One text to family when labor starts lets everyone pray at once.
  • Pray for your care team. They are part of the answer to your prayer.

Once your baby arrives, sleep becomes the next big prayer request. Here is how families are doing, from Betteroo’s annual parent survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short prayer for safe delivery of baby?

A simple one is: ‘Lord, bring this baby safely into the world and keep mother and child well. Amen.’ It is easy to repeat through contractions or to text to someone in labor.

What can I text a friend as a prayer for safe delivery?

Try: ‘Praying for you right now! May God give you strength for every contraction, peace in your heart, and a safe delivery of your sweet baby.’ Add her name to make it personal.

What Bible verse is good for labor and delivery?

Isaiah 41:10 is a favorite: ‘Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee.’ John 16:21, Psalm 46:1, and Philippians 4:6 to 7 are also popular in labor.

Should I call my doctor or just pray when labor starts?

Both. Prayer can give you strength and calm, but it does not replace care. ACOG advises calling your ob-gyn or obstetric care provider if you think you are in labor or your water breaks, and the CDC urges immediate care for warning signs such as heavy bleeding, a severe headache, or your baby moving less.

After the delivery comes the night shift.
