A prayer for pregnancy is often the first thing a mother says after the test turns positive, sometimes before she has told a single person. Nine months is a long time to hope, wait, and worry. These original prayers give you words for every week of it, from the first flutter of nerves to the drive to the hospital.

On this page you will find short daily prayers, a pregnancy prayer for health, prayers for each trimester, prayers for anxiety and for the baby in the womb, prayers while trying to conceive and for pregnancy after loss, prayers for labor and a safe delivery, and prayers a husband, mother, or friend can say for you.

Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is marked as Scripture. Change ‘this baby’ to a name or a nickname if you have one. For words to share in a card or a caption, see our pregnancy quotes.

Short Prayers for Pregnancy

A short prayer for pregnancy fits into the minute before you get out of bed, the wait at the doctor’s office, or the walk back from the bathroom at 3 am. Pick one and make it yours.

Lord, thank You for this baby. Keep us both healthy today, and keep my heart at rest. Amen.
God, You know every day of this pregnancy before I live it. Walk me through this one. Amen.
Father, bless the little life growing inside me. Let this child grow strong, week by week. Amen.
Lord, I am tired and I am grateful. Give me strength for today and sleep for tonight. Amen.
God, calm my stomach, steady my nerves, and remind me that I am not doing this alone. Amen.
Jesus, be near my baby and near me. Carry what I cannot carry today. Amen.
Father, I hand You the worries I woke up with. Give me back peace in their place. Amen.
Lord, my body is doing something I cannot see or control. I trust You with every part of it. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, thank You for this baby. Keep us both healthy today, and keep my heart at rest. Amen.

Gratitude, health, and peace are the three things almost every expectant mother asks for. This prayer holds all three and takes one breath to say, which matters on the mornings when one breath is all you have.

Prayer for a Healthy Pregnancy

A pregnancy prayer for health asks for the things no vitamin can promise: a body that copes, a baby that grows, and care that catches whatever needs catching. Prayer and prenatal care belong together. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development says that getting early and regular prenatal care improves the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Heavenly Father, I ask for a healthy pregnancy from the first week to the last. Guard my body as it changes. Keep my blood pressure steady, my sugar level, and my strength up. Let this baby grow on time and in full, with a strong heart and strong lungs. Bring us both safely to the day we meet. Amen.
Lord, bless the doctors, midwives, and nurses who care for us. Give them sharp eyes and kind hands, and give me the courage to ask every question on my list. Amen.
God, be in the room at every scan and every test. Whatever the screen shows, let me hear it with You beside me. Amen.
Father, help me care for this body You are using. Give me an appetite for good food, the will to rest, and grace for the days I manage neither. Amen.
Lord, protect this pregnancy from illness, accident, and every complication. Where there is risk, send help early. Where there is nothing to fear, let me believe it. Amen.

Pregnancy Prayers for Each Trimester

Each trimester asks something different of a mother. These prayers follow the months as they come.

First trimester

Lord, this life is so new that hardly anyone knows. You know. Hold this tiny beginning carefully, and hold me through the weeks of waiting to feel sure. Amen.
God, the nausea and the tiredness are heavier than I expected. Help me keep food down, get through the workday, and remember what all of this is for. Amen.

Second trimester

Father, thank You for the first kick and for energy returning. Let me enjoy these middle weeks without waiting for something to go wrong. Amen.
Lord, as this baby’s ears begin to hear, let the first sounds be laughter, music, and the voices of people who already love them. Amen.

Third trimester

God, I am heavy, short of breath, and short of sleep. Give me patience with my body in these last weeks and tenderness toward everyone who has to live with me. Amen.
Lord, the day is close now. Turn this baby the right way, ready my body for its work, and settle my mind before labor begins. Amen.

Prayer for Pregnancy Anxiety and Fear

Worry is one of the most common parts of pregnancy and one of the least talked about. These prayers do not ask you to pretend you are calm. They hand the fear to Someone who can hold it.

Lord, my mind runs to every bad outcome before my feet touch the floor. Slow my thoughts. Remind me that today, right now, this baby and I are in Your hands. Amen.
God, I read too much last night and frightened myself. Quiet the noise, and let me rest in what is true and not in what might be. Amen.
Father, I am afraid I will not be a good mother. You chose me for this child knowing exactly who I am. Grow me into what this baby needs. Amen.
Lord, I am waiting on test results and the waiting is its own kind of hard. Stay with me in it. Whatever the answer, do not let me face it alone. Amen.
God, when fear wakes me in the night, be the first thing I reach for. Give me slow breath, a still heart, and sleep again. Amen.

When worry is more than worry

If anxiety or low mood is making daily life hard, tell your doctor or midwife. It is common, and it is treatable. In the US you can also call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 1-800-944-4773. Prayer and professional help work well side by side. Betteroo is not a medical provider, and nothing here replaces advice from your own care team.

Prayers for the Baby in the Womb

Some mothers pray out loud with a hand on their belly, and many say it settles them both. These prayers are for the child you have not met yet.

Lord, bless my baby’s heart as it beats, lungs as they form, and every finger and toe. Finish what You have started. Amen.
God, You are knitting this child together where I cannot see. Take Your time. Miss nothing. Amen.
Father, give this baby a sound mind, a strong body, and a gentle spirit. Let them arrive already knowing they were wanted. Amen.
Little one, may God keep you safe in there and bring you safely out here. We are getting ready for you. Amen.
Lord, I do not know yet if this is a son or a daughter, or what name they will carry. You do. Bless the person this baby is going to become. Amen.

Once you know who is coming, we have a prayer for my son and a prayer for my daughter.

Prayers While Trying to Get Pregnant

For many families the praying starts long before the pregnancy does. If you are still waiting, these are for you.

Lord, You know how much we want a child. Open the way for a pregnancy in Your time, and keep our hope alive while we wait. Amen.
God, another month has passed and my arms are still empty. Catch my tears, guard my marriage, and do not let bitterness move in. Amen.
Father, guide the doctors helping us and give us wisdom about each next step. Let us be at peace with one another whatever we decide. Amen.
Lord, give me a glad heart for friends who are expecting, even on the days when their news is hard to hear. Amen.

Prayer for Pregnancy After Loss

A pregnancy that follows a loss carries joy and grief in the same body. You are allowed to feel both. These prayers make room for both.

Lord, I am pregnant again, and I am afraid to hope. Hold my joy and my fear together. Let me love this baby fully, starting today. Amen.
God, I have not forgotten the baby I lost. Thank You that loving this child takes nothing from that one. Keep them both in Your care. Amen.
Father, every appointment brings the old fear back. Go ahead of me into each one, and sit with me in the waiting room. Amen.
Lord, let this be the baby I get to bring home. Until I hold them, hold me. Amen.

Prayers for Labor and a Safe Delivery

As the due date gets close, the prayers get simpler. Most of them come down to one request: bring us both through.

Heavenly Father, I ask for a safe delivery. Let labor begin when my baby is ready. Give me strength for every contraction and calm between them. Guide the hands that help us, and let the first sound in that room be a strong, healthy cry. Amen.
Lord, I do not know how this birth will go. If the plan changes, steady me. A safe arrival matters more to me than the way we get there. Amen.
God, be my strength when mine runs out. When I say I cannot do this, remind me that I already am. Amen.
For a cesarean birth. Father, guide the surgeon’s hands and keep me calm on that table. Protect my baby, protect my body, and help me heal well afterward. Amen.
For the first hours. Lord, when they lay this baby on my chest, let me take it in. Bless our first feed, our first night, and the long sweet work of getting to know each other. Amen.

Then comes the part nobody can fully prepare you for: the nights. This is what the first year looks like for most families, according to Betteroo’s annual survey of parents.

Prayers to Say for a Pregnant Wife, Daughter, or Friend

If you love someone who is expecting, praying for her is one of the few things you can do at any hour and from any distance. Put her name in.

From a husband. Lord, watch over my wife and our child. Show me how to carry more so that she can carry this. Make me patient, present, and ready to be a father. Amen.
From a mother. Father, my daughter is going to be a mother. Keep her and my grandchild safe. Help me support her without taking over, and let me be the calm voice on the phone. Amen.
From a friend. God, bless my friend and the baby she is carrying. Give her easy days, good news at every appointment, and people who show up with dinner. Amen.
For a blessing at a baby shower. Lord, we thank You for this mother and for the child we are all waiting to meet. Bless her body, her home, and her heart, and surround this baby with love from the very first day. Amen.

Bible Verses to Pray During Pregnancy

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain. Many mothers write one on a card and keep it by the bed or in the hospital bag.

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.Psalm 139:13 to 14 (KJV)
For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him.1 Samuel 1:27 (KJV)
Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.Isaiah 40:11 (KJV)
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6 to 7 (KJV)

How to Pray Through Your Pregnancy

About 44% of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s most recent Religious Landscape Study. You do not need a long quiet hour to join them. One short prayer tied to something you already do each day is enough to build the habit.

A simple prayer focus for each stage of pregnancy.
  • Tie it to a routine. Pray while you take your prenatal vitamin, on the drive to each appointment, or when you feel the baby move.
  • Pray out loud sometimes. A hand on your belly and a few spoken words can settle you both.
  • Write one down. A prayer copied into a journal now becomes a keepsake for your child later.
  • Ask someone to pray with you. A partner, a mother, or a friend can carry the words on the days you are too tired to find them.

More prayers for the months ahead

Start the day with a morning prayer and end it with a night prayer. For the whole household there is a prayer for family page, and for grandparents-to-be, a prayer for grandchildren.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good prayer for pregnancy?

A simple daily one is: ‘Lord, thank You for this baby. Keep us both healthy today, and keep my heart at rest. Amen.’ It covers gratitude, health, and peace, which are the three things most expectant mothers ask for, and it is short enough to say every morning.

How do I pray for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery?

Name what you are asking for: a body that stays strong, a baby that grows on time, wise doctors or midwives, and a safe birth for you both. For example: ‘Heavenly Father, guard my body as it changes, let this baby grow strong, and bring us both safely to the day we meet. Amen.’ Prayer goes alongside regular prenatal care, not in place of it.

What Bible verse can I pray during pregnancy?

Psalm 139:13 to 14 is the most loved: ‘I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.’ Many mothers also pray 1 Samuel 1:27, ‘For this child I prayed’, and Philippians 4:6 to 7 when they feel anxious.

What is a short prayer for pregnancy anxiety?

Try: ‘Father, I hand You the worries I woke up with. Give me back peace in their place. Amen.’ If worry or low mood is getting in the way of daily life, talk with your doctor or midwife too. Anxiety in pregnancy is common and treatable.

Baby on the way?

The best time to learn how newborn sleep works is before you are too tired to read about it. Betteroo builds a gentle, personalized plan around your baby’s age and temperament. About three minutes to start.
