Pregnancy quotes have to do a lot of work. Announcements, bump photos, shower cards, and the private group chat at 2 am in week 34 when nothing fits and nobody warned you about the heartburn. These fifty-five are original, and they are sorted by which of those you need.

They run in order: announcement lines, first trimester, second, third, and then the honest ones that do not belong on a card at all but are the truest of the lot.

Every line here is written by us and free for you to use on a card, a print, a caption, or anywhere else. No misattributed authors, no copyright worry.

Pregnancy Announcement Quotes

The announcement has one job: say the thing clearly, then get out of the way. The short ones outperform the clever ones almost every time.

“Two of us, plus one, arriving in spring.”
“We have been keeping the world’s worst secret since January.”
“Adding a very small person to the household. Details in June.”
“It turns out the best news is also the hardest to say out loud.”
“One heartbeat became two and we have not stopped grinning since.”
“Currently growing our favourite person.”
“We told the dog first. She has been very discreet.”
“Coming soon, and already in charge.”
“The next chapter starts in October and we cannot wait to meet it.”
“Something enormous, currently the size of a lime.”

If You Only Read One

“We have been keeping the world’s worst secret since January.”

First Trimester Quotes

The strangest stretch: the most is happening and the least is visible. You feel dreadful, you cannot tell anyone why, and everyone at work thinks you have gone off coffee for lifestyle reasons.

“Nothing has changed and everything has changed and I cannot tell a soul.”
“Week nine: sustained entirely by dry crackers and denial.”
“I have never been this tired and this happy in the same body.”
“The first trimester is a secret you carry around like a bowling ball.”
“Turns out morning sickness is a scheduling suggestion, not a rule.”
“Everything smells wrong and I have never loved anyone this much.”
“Nobody can see it yet, and it is already the largest thing in my life.”
“I am growing a person on four hours of sleep and a packet of ginger biscuits.”

Second Trimester Quotes

The good bit. The energy comes back, the bump arrives, and somewhere around week 18 you feel movement for the first time and the whole thing stops being theoretical.

“The first kick turns an idea into a person.”
“Week twenty, and suddenly there is someone in here with opinions.”
“Halfway, and I have started talking to my own stomach in public.”
“Everyone told me the second trimester was the good one. For once, everyone was right.”
“You moved while I was in a meeting and I forgot every word I was saying.”
“I have never been so aware of my own body, or so uninterested in what it looks like.”
“The bump arrived overnight, like it had been waiting for permission.”
“Every scan is a small reunion with someone I have not met.”

Third Trimester Quotes

Long. The last six weeks of pregnancy stretch in a way the first thirty do not, and the quotes that help are the ones that admit it.

“Week 36: the furniture has stopped fitting around me.”
“I am enormous, I am uncomfortable, and I would not hand this back for anything.”
“Nobody warned me that the waiting would be the hardest physical work of the lot.”
“Two more weeks, or four, or possibly never. Nobody will commit.”
“Sleeping is now a construction project involving six pillows and a plan.”
“My body has done something extraordinary and would very much like to lie down.”
“Every stranger has a due date opinion and none of them are correct.”
“Ready is not a feeling I am going to arrive at. She will just have to come anyway.”

A note on the third trimester and sleep

Broken sleep in the last trimester is close to universal, and it is not a preview of how you will cope later. Waking to turn over is not the same as waking to a newborn. Getting a sleep plan in place before the birth takes one decision off a very full list.

Honest Pregnancy Quotes

Pregnancy is routinely described as a glow. For plenty of people it is a nine month negotiation with a body that has stopped consulting them, wrapped around real fear. These are for that.

“I am thrilled and I am terrified and those turn out to be the same feeling wearing different coats.”
“Loving someone you have not met is a peculiar kind of exposure.”
“I did not glow. I endured, beautifully, for nine months.”
“The scans are the only time I stop holding my breath.”
“Everyone asks how the baby is. Almost nobody asks how I am.”
“You can want something enormously and still find carrying it very hard.”
“This pregnancy is not the one I imagined, and it is still mine.”
“I will tell her one day that she was wanted before she was possible.”

If pregnancy has followed a loss, our rainbow baby quotes were written for exactly that mix of hope and held breath. For what comes after the birth, see postpartum quotes and new mom quotes.

“The best thing I have ever done, so far.”
“Baby on board, opinions already formed.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good short pregnancy quote for a bump photo?

Under six words is the sweet spot, because the photo is doing the talking. ‘Growing, slowly, then all at once’, ‘Last photo as two’, or simply a week number with ‘and counting’ all work. Longer lines compete with the image instead of captioning it.

What do you write in a pregnancy announcement?

Say the fact plainly and name a month or season, then stop. ‘Two of us, plus one, arriving in spring’ outperforms anything cleverer, because the news is the news. If you want warmth, add one short line about how long you have been sitting on it.

What are good pregnancy quotes for a baby shower card?

Write to the parent, not only the baby. A shower card that acknowledges the work of the last eight months lands better than one that skips straight to the arrival. Adding a specific offer, such as a meal in the first fortnight, turns a card into something useful.

Is it normal to feel scared as well as excited during pregnancy?

Yes, and it is extremely common. Anticipating a major life change with both excitement and fear is an ordinary response, not a warning sign about how you will parent. If anxiety is persistent, interfering with sleep or daily life, or accompanied by low mood, that is worth raising with your midwife or doctor, who will screen for it as a matter of routine.
