A prayer for unborn baby and mother holds two lives at once: the little one growing in the womb and the woman carrying them. Whether you are expecting, praying with your partner, or lifting up a friend, these original prayers are written for the whole journey.

Inside you will find short prayers, prayers for a baby in the womb, prayers for a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery, prayers for each trimester, prayers from a dad or partner and from grandparents and friends, a hopeful prayer for worrying news, Catholic prayers for an unborn baby and mother, and verses about life in the womb. Every prayer is original to Betteroo unless it is labeled as traditional or as Scripture.

Short Prayers for an Unborn Baby and Mother

Lord, hold this baby in the womb and hold this mother in Your arms. Amen.
God, You are knitting this little one together. Bless every heartbeat. Amen.
Father, keep mother and baby healthy, safe, and at peace today. Amen.
Jesus, grow this baby strong and give this mama rest. Amen.
Lord, You see the baby we cannot see yet. Watch over them. Amen.
God, bless this pregnancy from today until the day we meet our baby. Amen.
Father, for every kick and flutter, thank You. Amen.

If You Only Read One

Lord, hold this baby in the womb and hold this mother in Your arms. Amen.

It is short enough to pray at every appointment and every sleepless night, and it does what this whole page is about: it asks for care for the baby and the mother at the same time.

Prayer for Baby in Womb

A prayer for baby in womb can be said with a hand on the belly. Many parents start talking and praying to their baby long before birth, and in the second half of pregnancy babies begin to hear sounds from outside the womb.

Little one, we are praying for you. Lord, form every part of this baby with care: their heart, their lungs, their mind, and their spirit. Let them grow safe and warm until it is time to be born. Amen.
Father, You know this baby’s name, their face, and their whole future. Thank You for knowing them before we do. Keep them in Your care. Amen.
God, as this baby turns and kicks tonight, I place my hand here and bless them. Grow strong, sweet one. You are already loved. Amen.
Lord, protect this baby from anything that could harm them in the womb. Give them everything they need to grow. Amen.

Prayer for Healthy Pregnancy and Safe Delivery

Lord, I ask You for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery. Keep my body strong, help this baby grow on time, and guide every doctor, midwife, and nurse who cares for us. When the day comes, bring my baby safely into my arms. Amen.
Father, guard this mother’s health: her blood pressure, her sleep, her strength, and her heart. Let her feel well enough to enjoy these months. Amen.
God, bless every scan and checkup. Let the news be good, and when it is not what we hoped, give us courage and wise care. Amen.
Jesus, prepare my body and my mind for birth. Take away fear and fill me with trust. Amen.

Prayers for Each Trimester

First trimester

Lord, it is early and only a few people know. Protect this tiny life, ease my nausea and exhaustion, and quiet my worry while we wait. Amen.

Second trimester

God, thank You for this baby’s growing body and for the first flutters I can feel. Bless the anatomy scan and give us joy in this season. Amen.

Third trimester

Father, my body is tired and my baby is almost here. Give me rest at night, comfort in my aches, and readiness for the day we meet. Amen.

Follow along week by week, from the first trimester to 36 weeks pregnant. Struggling to sleep with a bump? See our guide on how to use a pregnancy pillow.

Prayers From a Dad, Partner, or Loved One

From dad. Lord, I cannot carry this baby, but I can carry some of the load. Show me how to care for my wife and our child. Protect them both, and make me ready to be a father. Amen.
From a partner. God, bless the woman I love and the baby she is carrying. Give her comfort when her body aches and courage when she is afraid. Amen.
From a grandparent. Father, my child is having a child. Wrap this mother and baby in Your care, and let me be a help and not a worry. Amen.
For a friend. Lord, I am praying for my friend and her unborn baby today. Give her a healthy pregnancy, a calm mind, and people around her who love her well. Amen.

A Hopeful Prayer When the News Is Worrying

Some parents search for a miracle prayer for baby in womb after a hard scan or a worrying test. If that is you, these are for you. Please keep talking to your doctor or midwife too, and call right away or seek emergency care if you notice warning signs such as bleeding or leaking fluid, your baby moving less or not at all, a severe headache that will not go away, changes in your vision, severe belly pain, or trouble breathing, as the CDC’s Hear Her campaign advises.

Lord, the doctors are worried and so am I. I ask You for a miracle for this baby in my womb. Heal what needs healing, strengthen what is weak, and give our care team wisdom. Whatever comes, do not let us walk through it alone. Amen.
Father, I am holding on to hope. Hold on to me. Protect my baby tonight and give me peace while we wait for answers. Amen.
God, You are the giver of life. I trust You with this little one, even when I do not understand. Amen.

Catholic Prayer for Unborn Baby and Mother

Many Catholic mothers pray the Hail Mary during pregnancy, since it honors Mary’s own pregnancy with Jesus, and ask for the intercession of Saint Gerard Majella, the patron saint of expectant mothers. The Hail Mary is labeled as traditional below; the other prayers are original.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.Hail Mary (Traditional Catholic prayer)
Blessed Mother, you carried Jesus and know what it is to wait for a baby. Pray for me and for the child in my womb, that we may both be healthy and safe. Amen.
Saint Gerard Majella, patron of mothers, pray for me as I carry this baby. Ask the Lord to keep us both safe until the day of birth. Amen.
Lord Jesus, You were once an unborn baby too. Bless this little one in my womb and bless me, Your daughter, as I carry them. Amen.

Bible Verses About Life in the Womb

These verses are quoted from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.Isaiah 40:11 (KJV)

How to Pray Through Your Pregnancy

About 44 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a day, according to Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study. Pregnancy gives you natural milestones to build a prayer habit around.

MilestoneWhat to pray forWho can join
Positive testProtection for the new lifeYou and your partner

Pregnancy milestones that make natural times to pray.
  • Pray with your hand on the belly. It connects you to your baby and steadies you.
  • Write prayers in a pregnancy journal. Your child may treasure them one day.
  • Invite others to pray. A baby shower blessing is a beautiful tradition.
  • Pray for yourself, not only the baby. A healthy mother is part of a healthy pregnancy.
