Quick Answer
Dates checked in November 2026 against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Hebcal, the U.S. Census Bureau, govinfo (U.S. Government Publishing Office), NASA, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Association of People with Disabilities. Weekdays were calculated, not copied.
July 2027 starts on a Thursday and ends on Saturday, July 31. Because the Fourth of July lands on a Sunday, many families get a three-day weekend from Saturday, July 3 through Monday, July 5.
July 2027 Holiday Calendar, Day by Day
Use this table as your family calendar. Independence Day is the only federal holiday in July; the other days are national observances, religious days, anniversaries or unofficial fun days, so expect regular work days unless your employer says otherwise.
| Date | Day | Holiday or observance | Type | Easy family idea |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 1 to 31 | Whole month | Disability Pride Month | Awareness month | Read a picture book with a main character who has a disability |
| July 1 to 31 | Whole month | National Ice Cream Month | Unofficial fun month (1984 proclamation) | Try one new flavor together |
| July 1 | Thursday | Canada Day | National holiday in Canada | Video call cousins or friends in Canada |
| July 4 | Sunday | Independence Day | Federal holiday (falls on a Sunday) | Watch a professional fireworks show |
| July 5 | Monday | Independence Day, observed | Federal holiday (observed date) | Backyard picnic and lawn games |
| July 18 | Sunday | National Ice Cream Day | Unofficial fun day (1984 proclamation) | Make frozen yogurt fruit bites |
| July 20 | Tuesday | Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary (1969) | Historical anniversary | Look for the moon after dinner |
| July 22 | Thursday | Fast of the 17th of Tammuz (Tzom Tammuz) | Religious (Jewish fast day) | Families who observe fast from dawn to nightfall |
| July 25 | Sunday | Parents’ Day | National observance (federal law) | Kids interview their parents |
| July 26 | Monday | Americans with Disabilities Act anniversary (1990) | Historical anniversary | Go on an accessibility walk around your neighborhood |
A note on “national days”: online July lists are packed with fun days, from hot dogs to sidewalk chalk, but most were started by companies or individuals and were never proclaimed by Congress or the President. We kept only National Ice Cream Day and Month, which trace back to a 1984 presidential proclamation.
Independence Day 2027: Sunday, July 4, Observed Monday, July 5
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists the 2027 federal holiday for Independence Day on Monday, July 5, 2027. When a federal holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the holiday for most federal employees, a rule OPM traces to Executive Order 11582. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Friday before is the day off instead, under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).
- What closes: federal offices close on Monday, July 5. Private employers set their own policies.
- When to celebrate: the holiday itself is still Sunday, July 4, but some towns move parades or fireworks to Saturday or Monday, so check your town’s schedule.
- Which anniversary: July 4, 2027 marks 251 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, the year after the big 250th celebrations of 2026.

Religious and Cultural Holidays in July 2027
July is quiet for religious holidays in 2027; two that families often expect in summer fall in June or August this year.
- Canada Day, Thursday, July 1: Canada’s national holiday falls three days before the Fourth of July. Families with relatives across the border can celebrate twice in one week.
- Fast of the 17th of Tammuz, Thursday, July 22: Hebcal lists Tzom Tammuz on July 22, 2027, from dawn to nightfall. This solemn fast recalls the breach of Jerusalem’s walls before the destruction of the Second Temple and begins the Three Weeks of mourning that lead up to Tisha B’Av.
- Tisha B’Av falls in August: Hebcal shows Tisha B’Av 2027 from sundown Wednesday, August 11 to nightfall Thursday, August 12, so it is in August this year, not July. Our August holidays calendar explains it.
- Islamic New Year falls in June: the first day of Muharram is expected in early June 2027, depending on moon sighting, so it is not a July holiday this year. See our June holidays calendar for the expected dates.

Toddlers do best with one short activity, ideally in the morning before it gets hot. On sticky afternoons, our water games for kids are the easiest way to celebrate anything.
Fireworks Safety for Kids: What the CPSC Says
In its 2026 safety release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported at least 15 deaths and an estimated 13,000 emergency department treated injuries linked to fireworks in 2025, including about 1,300 injuries from sparklers alone. Hands, fingers and the head were the most commonly burned areas.
The CPSC’s message for parents is direct: keep children away from fireworks, including sparklers, which can burn at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The agency calls professional public displays the safest option. If adults in your group do use legal consumer fireworks, the CPSC recommends:
- Buy only legal consumer fireworks and follow the label. Never use homemade, altered or illegal fireworks.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby, and soak used fireworks before throwing them away.
- Light one firework at a time, then move away quickly. Never lean over a firework while lighting the fuse.
- Never point or throw fireworks at people, animals or buildings, and never hold them or attach them to your body or clothing.
- Never relight a dud. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposal.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Practical ideas that work with kids. Give little ones glow sticks or a small flag to wave instead of a sparkler. Pick a viewing spot well back from the launch area, and bring snug-fitting ear protection for babies and toddlers who startle at loud booms. Agree on a meeting place in case anyone gets separated, and leave early if your child is overwhelmed.
National Ice Cream Day, Parents’ Day and the Moon Landing
Three July days are made for kids, and each has a real story behind it.
- National Ice Cream Day, Sunday, July 18, 2027: govinfo, the U.S. Government Publishing Office site, explains that President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5219 on July 9, 1984, naming July 1984 National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day. The proclamation was for that year, but the tradition stuck, so we list it as an unofficial fun day. The third Sunday of July 2027 is July 18. Blend frozen fruit with yogurt for a homemade version.
- Parents’ Day, Sunday, July 25, 2027: federal law sets the fourth Sunday in July as Parents’ Day. The U.S. Census Bureau notes that it was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed it into law. The law encourages people and communities to honor parents’ role in raising their children. It is a national observance, not a day off.
- Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary, Tuesday, July 20, 2027: NASA’s mission overview says Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969, and landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong stepped out first, Buzz Aldrin followed about 20 minutes later, and Michael Collins orbited above. The crew splashed down in the Pacific on July 24. July 20, 2027 is the 58th anniversary.
For the moon landing, look for the Moon together after dinner, then let kids invent a mission name and draw their own spacecraft.
Disability Pride Month and the ADA Anniversary
According to the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), Disability Pride Month is in July because it marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which President George H. W. Bush signed on July 26, 1990. In 2027, that anniversary falls on Monday, July 26, the 37th since the law was signed.
- History and flag: the AAPD notes that the first Disability Pride Parade was held in Chicago in 2004. The disability pride flag was posted by Ann Magill in 2019 and updated in 2021 to be more visually accessible. Its colored stripes stand for different kinds of disability, including physical, sensory, cognitive and intellectual, psychosocial, and invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.
- Talking about it with young kids: keep it simple and positive: “People’s bodies and brains work in lots of different ways, and everyone deserves to join in.” Point out ramps, elevators and closed captions, and explain that they help everyone join in.
Keeping Sleep on Track During July Celebrations
Late fireworks, warm bedrooms, long evenings and travel make July hard on little sleepers. A few habits help:
- For babies and young toddlers, it is fine to skip the late fireworks show or watch from a window.
- If you do stay out late, keep the next morning’s wake time close to normal, offer an earlier nap, and get back to the usual bedtime that night.
- Keep the toddler bedtime routine short and familiar, even with house guests.
- On hot nights, dress your baby lightly and keep the room comfortably cool. Our guide to baby room temperature for sleep explains what to aim for, and loose blankets never belong in a crib.
- Traveling for the long weekend? Bring a portable crib so your baby has a familiar, safe sleep space, and see our guide to baby sleep while traveling.
Heat safety on busy days. Plan outdoor fun for mornings or evenings, keep little ones in the shade, offer drinks often and dress kids in light, loose clothing. Never leave a child alone in a car, even for a minute. If a child seems unusually sleepy, confused or sick after time in the heat, move them somewhere cool and call your pediatrician; get emergency help right away if they do not improve quickly. For babies under 12 months, every nap at a picnic or party still belongs on the back, alone, on a firm, flat surface with no blankets or pillows.
