Happy 1st birthday is a strange thing to write, because the baby cannot read it and the parents barely remember the year. That is exactly why the words matter. A first birthday card is a note to the future, saved in a box and read again in twenty years.

This page gathers original first birthday wishes for every card on the table: short happy first birthday lines, messages from Mom and Dad, first birthday wishes for a boy and for a girl, 1st birthday wishes from grandparents, aunts, uncles, and godparents, first birthday quotes, and funny ones for the parents who survived. Every line is original to Betteroo and unattributed.

Writing for an older child too? Our happy birthday wishes cover every age and relationship.

“One whole year of you. What a gift.”
“Happy first birthday to the tiniest person with the biggest fan club.”
“One year old and already everyone’s favorite.”
“Happy 1st birthday, sweet baby. You made this the best year yet.”

Happy First Birthday Wishes from Mom and Dad

The first birthday belongs to the parents as much as the baby. These happy first birthday messages are written from the two people who were there for all 365 nights of it.

“Happy first birthday, my love. A year ago they put you in my arms, and I have not been the same person since.”
“One year ago we met you. It feels like yesterday, and it feels like we have always known you.”
“Happy 1st birthday to the baby who taught us how little sleep we need and how much love we have.”
“You have been here for one year, and already we cannot remember what we talked about before you.”
“Happy first birthday. You made me a mom, and it is the best thing I have ever been called.”
“To our one year old: thank you for choosing us. We are still learning, and you are a patient teacher.”
“A year of firsts: first smile, first tooth, first word. Today, first cake. We have loved every one.”
“Happy 1st birthday, baby. I would do every sleepless night again to get to today.”

“From Grandma. One year of rocking you, and I would not trade a minute. Happy birthday, my darling.”

“From an aunt. Happy 1st birthday to my favorite tiny person. I plan to spoil you for decades.”
“From an uncle. One year old! I will teach you everything your parents say you are too young for.”
“From a godparent. Happy first birthday, my godchild. I promised to look out for you, and I will keep that promise all your life.”
“From a cousin. Happy 1st birthday! Hurry up and learn to walk so we can play.”
“From a family friend. I have known your parents for years, and I have never seen them happier. Happy first birthday, little one.”

Later birthdays are covered here: happy birthday grandson, happy birthday granddaughter, happy birthday niece, and happy birthday nephew.

“The days of the first year crawl. The year itself runs.”
“A one year old is proof that the biggest changes come in the smallest packages.”
“Nobody remembers their own first birthday. That is why the people who love them write it down.”

What a First Birthday Really Marks

A first birthday is a milestone for development as well as for the photo album. According to the CDC’s developmental milestones, by one year most children play games like pat-a-cake, wave bye-bye, call a parent ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ or another special name, pull up to stand, and walk while holding on to furniture. If you want a card line that will make the parents smile, mention one of those: ‘Happy 1st birthday to the best waver in the family.’

Sleep changes too. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children 1 to 2 years old get 11 to 14 hours of sleep in every 24 hours, naps included. Many babies hit a rough patch right around the birthday, so if the party week is a tired one, see our guides to the 12 month sleep regression, the 12 month old sleep schedule, and 12 month old milestones.

How to write a first birthday card that gets kept

  • Write to the adult the baby will become. ‘When you read this someday’ is a good way to start.
  • Record one detail from right now. Their favorite food, the way they say ‘ba’ for ball, how they dance to the dishwasher.
  • Add a line for the parents. They did the year too.
  • Date it and sign your full name. In twenty years, ‘Love, Aunt J’ will be a mystery.

Planning the rest of year two? Try activities for a 1 year old, the 1 year old feeding schedule, and the 2 to 1 nap transition for when two naps stop working.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you write in a 1st birthday card?

Write a warm wish for the baby and one detail the grown child will enjoy reading later. For example: ‘Happy 1st birthday, little one. The world is better with you in it. Today you smashed your cake and waved at everyone twice.’ Add a line for the parents, then date and sign it.

What is a short happy 1st birthday wish?

Try ‘One whole year of you. What a gift’, ‘You are one today, and you are so loved’, or ‘Happy first birthday to the tiniest person with the biggest fan club.’ Each one fits a gift tag or a photo caption.

What is a good first birthday wish for a boy or a girl?

For a boy: ‘Happy first birthday to our boy. May you always meet the world with that fearless laugh.’ For a girl: ‘Happy first birthday to our girl. May you grow up brave, kind, and exactly yourself.’ Either line works for any baby with a quick edit.

What do you say to parents on their baby’s first birthday?

Congratulate them as well as the baby. ‘A first birthday is a party for the baby and a medal for the parents’ says it kindly, and ‘Congratulations on keeping a tiny human alive for a full year’ says it with a laugh.

Is your one year old still waking at night?

Betteroo builds a gentle, personalized sleep plan around your child’s age and temperament, from the first birthday through the toddler years. It takes about three minutes to find the starting point.
