Sleep · From age 2
Toddler pillow: none in the first year, a small one from age 2.
A pillow is the one piece of bedding a toddler doesn’t need early. The AAP keeps pillows out of a baby’s sleep space in the first year. We’d wait for the maker’s age, 2, and buy one small pillow.

The short answer
Under 1, no pillow. From 2, one small toddler pillow, and that’s the whole decision. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep pillows and pillow-like toys out of a baby’s sleep area, and its safe-sleep advice covers babies up to 1 year of age (AAP). We picked the Little Sleepy Head Toddler Pillow: its maker designs it for children aged 2 and up, it’s 13 x 18 in., and it’s in our Budget band.
Between 1 and 2, we found no AAP page that gives an age for a first pillow, so we go by the maker’s age. On October 14, 2026 we checked the pick’s live US listing, price band, the maker’s page and the CPSC recall database.

What a toddler pillow has to do
A common mistake is adding a pillow while the crib is still a baby’s sleep space. Under 1, the AAP’s advice is a bare crib.
We hold every candidate to the same things: the maker’s stated age, a toddler size rather than an adult pillow, care that goes in the washer, and who sells it on Amazon.
The maker's age
We only pick a pillow its maker rates for toddlers, and we follow that age.

A small pillow made for a toddler, not a cut-down adult one.
Washable

No pillow at all. A pillow is a comfort choice, not a requirement: if your child sleeps well without one, there’s nothing to buy. If they’re 2 or older and ask for one, that’s the time.

What we would skip
Three things we’d leave out of a baby’s bed
They’re sold for babies and toddlers. Here’s what the AAP says.
Any pillow in the first year
The AAP says soft objects and loose bedding can increase a baby’s risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation, and lists pillows first (AAP).
Pillow-like toys in the crib
The same AAP list includes pillow-like toys, quilts, comforters and mattress toppers. If you’re worried about your baby getting cold, it suggests layers of clothing or a wearable blanket.
Nursing pillows and loungers for sleep
The AAP says not to use products for sleep that aren’t specifically marketed for infant sleep, and names Boppy pillows and Dock-a-Tots as examples.

Questions parents ask
FAQ
When can a toddler use a pillow?
The AAP’s safe-sleep advice, which keeps pillows out of a baby’s sleep area, covers babies up to 1 year of age (AAP). We found no AAP page that gives an age for a first pillow, so we follow the maker: Little Sleepy Head designs its toddler pillow for children aged 2 and up (Little Sleepy Head).
Does my toddler need a pillow?
No. It’s a comfort choice. If your child is 2 or older and sleeping in a bed, a small toddler pillow is a reasonable buy; if not, the $0 version is fine.
When should a toddler move to a bed?
The AAP says that once children are about 3 feet tall, they should start sleeping in a bed, and that you can start with the mattress on the floor if you’re worried about falls (AAP).
What size is a toddler pillow?
Little Sleepy Head’s is 13 x 18 in. (maker), smaller than an adult standard pillow. The amazon.com listing gives a 4 in. loft.
Has it been recalled?
We found no CPSC recall for Little Sleepy Head on October 14, 2026.
Why trust Worth It
How we choose
We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.
We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We band the picks and cite an exact price only when it explains why we passed on a product, as of the check date. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.
For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
