Night potty training: protect the mattress, and wait for the body.

Dry nights depend on a body that is ready, not on gear. The one thing worth buying is a waterproof layer for the mattress, and we’d buy two.

Independent picks. If you buy through our Amazon links we may earn a commission; as an Amazon Associate, Betteroo earns from qualifying purchases. It never decides what makes the list. How we choose

The short answer

Buy two waterproof mattress protectors, and that’s the whole decision. We picked the American Baby Company fitted protector: it fits a crib or toddler-bed mattress, goes under the sheet, and is in our Budget band. Nights in a diaper or training pants are fine for as long as they’re needed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says bladder control at night usually comes much later than in the day, frequently months or even years after daytime training is complete (AAP). On October 13, 2026 we checked the pick’s live US listing, price band, the maker’s specs and the CPSC recall database.

One thing for the bed

Before you buy

What a mattress protector has to do

A common mistake is buying a single protector. The night it’s needed, it’s wet, and the spare is the one that saves the change.

We hold every candidate to the same things: a fitted size for a crib and toddler-bed mattress, a waterproof layer under the sheet, care that goes in the washer and dryer, and who sells it on Amazon.

Fits the mattress

A fitted crib and toddler-bed size, snug under the sheet.

Washer and dryer

So the spare is dry by the next night.

Cheap enough for two

We’d rather own two in the Budget band than one premium pad.

A fitted pad for a crib or toddler-bed mattress: American Baby Company lists style #2863 at 28 x 52 x 9 in., with a soft polyester top and bottom layer and a waterproof, breathable TPU layer in the middle (American Baby Company). The amazon.com listing says it fits mattresses up to 6 in. thick, has all-around elastic, and is machine washable and dryer safe, tumble dry on low. We’d buy two: one on the bed, one in the wash.

Why it’s worth it

  • Fits a standard crib and toddler-bed mattress
  • Quilt-like top, under the sheet (maker)
  • Machine washable and dryer safe (listing)
Worth noting: You need two for a night change without waiting on the dryer, so the real cost is about $28. It’s the crib and toddler-bed size only: a twin bed needs a twin protector.

What we would skip

Three things we’d leave on the shelf

They’re sold to parents of toddlers. Here’s why we’d pass.

Skip

Bedwetting "cures"

The AAP warns that many programs and devices claiming to “cure” bedwetting make false claims and may be very expensive, and says to talk with your child’s doctor before starting any treatment program. In most cases, it says, bedwetting decreases as the child’s body matures (AAP).

Skip

A bedwetting alarm, as a first step

The AAP describes an alarm as something to consider if a child still can’t stay dry at night after trying its other steps for a few months, and suggests asking your child’s doctor which type suits your child.

Skip

A zippered encasement for nightly changes

A six-sided cover means lifting the mattress out of the crib to change it. A fitted protector comes off like a sheet.

Protectors we passed on

  • Biloban fitted crib mattress protector. The top seller in Amazon’s search for waterproof crib mattress protectors on October 13, 2026, sold by Biloban, not Amazon. Biloban’s 2024 CPSC recall covered pack and play mattresses, not this protector.
  • Yoofoss waterproof crib protector, 2 pack. About $18 for two on October 13, 2026, but sold by a third-party seller (Yoofoss US).
  • Newton Baby waterproof crib mattress pad. About $80 on October 13, 2026: more than five times our pick’s price.
  • Naturepedic organic waterproof crib mattress pad. About $79 on October 13, 2026, also a Mid-range price for a layer we’d buy two of.

Questions parents ask

FAQ

When do toddlers stay dry at night?

Later than in the day. The AAP says nighttime bladder control usually comes much later, frequently months or even years after daytime training is complete, and that many children under six are not physiologically capable of staying dry at night (AAP).

Is bedwetting normal?

The AAP says most children wet their beds during toilet training, and that studies have shown 15% of 5- and 7-year-olds wet the bed (AAP).

Do I need a mattress protector?

The AAP’s advice is to protect the bed: “A plastic cover under the sheets protects the mattress” (AAP). We’d buy two, so one can be in the wash.

When should I talk to the doctor?

If you’re concerned, or your child is. The AAP also says to talk with your child’s doctor if a child who has been completely toilet trained for 6 months or longer suddenly begins wetting the bed, and lists other signs to call about, such as pain, burning or straining while urinating (AAP).

Has it been recalled?

We found no CPSC recall for American Baby Company on October 13, 2026.

How we choose

Checked and sourcedEvery pick is checked against the maker's own age and weight limits and the CPSC recall database. Where safety guidance applies, we link the AAP, CPSC, FDA or NIH source right next to the advice.
The $0 option, alwaysMost problems have a $0 answer. It goes on the page, even when it costs us the sale.
A skip list with sourcesAdd-ons and traps we would leave on the shelf, with the guidance behind every safety call, plus the products we passed on and why.
Picked for an agePicks follow what babies actually do each month, not what is on sale this week.

We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.

We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We don’t print exact prices because they change daily. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.

For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
