Sleep · From about 2, in a big bed
Toddler bed rail: for a big bed, never for a crib.
A bed rail is for a child who’s moved to a real bed and gets in and out on their own. The CPSC’s rule covers rails for adult beds, typically for ages 2 to 5. Which one depends on your bed.

The short answer
Your bed decides it. A twin or bigger bed with a box spring: the Regalo Swing Down Bed Rail, for ages 2 to 5, in our Budget band. A toddler bed, or a bed without a box spring: the Hiccapop foam bumper, which its maker says fits toddler beds through king.
A bed rail goes on a bed, not a crib: the CPSC describes portable bed rails as made for an adult bed, for children who can get in and out of bed on their own, typically 2 to 5 (CPSC). On October 15, 2026 we checked both picks’ maker pages, live US listings, price bands and the CPSC recall database. See both side by side.

What we looked at
A common mistake is buying the rail first and finding out it doesn’t fit the bed. Each maker says which beds its rail is for, so we started there.
We held both to the same things, and where a maker doesn’t give something, the table says so.
The federal standard
Bed rails fall under 16 CFR 1224 (ASTM F2085). We picked rails whose makers state it, or ASTM.
The maker's bed type
A rail goes only on the beds its maker names.
Recalls
We searched the CPSC recall database by brand and product name.

What we would skip
Three things to skip
They’re common. Here’s what the CPSC and the makers say.
A bed rail on a crib
The CPSC describes portable bed rails as made to be installed on an adult bed, for children who can get in and out of bed on their own (CPSC). A crib is not that bed.
A rail on a bed its maker doesn't name
Each maker names the beds its rail is for: Regalo’s is for a mattress and box spring (Regalo). The federal rule includes tests for the openings between a rail and the mattress (CPSC).
A bumper or rail on the top bunk
Hiccapop says its bumper is for the bottom bunk only, and that only the bed maker’s own safety barrier should be used on the top bunk (Hiccapop).

Questions parents ask
FAQ
What age is a toddler bed rail for?
The CPSC says portable bed rails are for children who can get in and out of bed unassisted, typically from 2 to 5 years of age (CPSC). Regalo rates its Swing Down rail for ages 2 to 5.
Can I put a bed rail on a toddler bed?
Only if the maker says so. Regalo’s Swing Down rail is for a mattress and box spring; Hiccapop says its foam bumper fits toddler beds (Hiccapop).
Can I use a bed rail on a crib?
No. Portable bed rails are made for an adult bed (CPSC).
Are foam bed bumpers safe?
The CPSC counts foam and inflatable bumpers as portable bed rails, under the same federal rule as metal ones (CPSC). Hiccapop says its bumper is tested to that standard, ASTM F2085-19.
When should my toddler move to a bed?
The AAP says that once children are about 3 feet tall, they should start sleeping in a bed (AAP).
Have these bed rails been recalled?
We found no CPSC recall for Regalo or Hiccapop on October 15, 2026.
Why trust Worth It
How we choose
We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.
We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We band the picks and cite an exact price only when it explains why we passed on a product, as of the check date. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.
For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
