The toddler lunch box: one small box now, a bigger one at 3.

Most lunch boxes on the shelf are sized and rated for preschool. We found one that its maker rates for toddlers, and we list the popular bigger box as the later step.

The short answer

A toddler needs one small box, and that’s the whole decision. We picked the Yumbox Snack: its maker calls it the ideal mini bento for toddlers, it opens with one latch, and it holds 2 cups across three sealed sections. It’s in our Budget band. The Bentgo Kids is the bigger box most parents know, and Bentgo rates it for ages 3 to 7, so we list it for later.

Neither box keeps food cold. If the lunch has anything perishable and there’s no fridge, the USDA says to pack at least two cold sources in the bag. On October 10, 2026 we checked both boxes’ live US listings, price bands and the CPSC recall database.

One box now, one for later

Before you buy

What a toddler’s lunch box has to do

A common mistake is buying the big-kid bento first. Most popular kids’ boxes are sized and rated for preschool and up, so we looked for a box whose maker names toddlers.

We assess both boxes on the same things: the maker’s age wording, how much it holds, how many compartments, whether it keeps food cold, and how it cleans.

Made for a toddler

An age wording from the maker that includes toddlers, and a latch a small child can learn.

Small enough

A toddler lunch is small; a 2-cup box fits it.

Cheap

Both boxes are in our Budget band.

Why it made the list

01
Sized for a toddler's lunch

Yumbox Snack, 3 Compartments, Princess Purple Glitter

A small bento with one latch, three sealed sections and a dip well.

Price band: BudgetCheck price on Amazon

Checked Oct 12, 2026: price, stock, specs, recalls

Yumbox calls the Snack “the ideal mini bento for toddlers, preschoolers”, and says its easy-open latch is designed for toddlers and young kids (Yumbox). The silicone-lined lid seals each compartment, so a thick dip or yogurt stays out of the crackers. It holds 2 cups in all: one 1-cup section, one 2/3-cup section and a dip well, in a box 6.7 by 5.1 by 1.8 inches (listing).

Why it’s worth it

  • Rated by its maker for toddlers
  • One latch to open, not two
  • The lowest price on this page
Worth noting: It isn’t for liquids: Yumbox says not juice or runny dressings. It doesn’t keep food cold on its own, so it needs an insulated bag and ice packs (listing), and Yumbox recommends hand-washing the outer box; only the tray goes in the dishwasher, top rack.

Safety check

  • No recalls found in the CPSC recall database (searched by product name, Oct 12, 2026). Yumbox has no recalls in the database.
  • Yumbox says it is made from BPA-free, phthalate-free and lead-free materials that meet FDA and CPSIA safety standards (Yumbox).

Later, from 3

The bigger box, for preschool

When lunches get bigger and your child starts preschool, a five-compartment box gives you more room. Bentgo rates this one for ages 3 to 7, so it isn’t a pick for a toddler.

Later: from 3

Bentgo Kids Lunch Box, Green

Five compartments for a preschool lunch, rated by Bentgo for ages 3 to 7.

Price band: BudgetCheck price on Amazon

Checked Oct 12, 2026: price, stock, specs, recalls

A bento box with five compartments that hold 2.4 cups in all, a leak-proof lid, latches Bentgo describes as easy for little hands, and rubber-coated edges for drops. The tray lifts out and is freezer safe, microwave safe and top-shelf dishwasher safe (Bentgo). Bentgo describes it as “Ideal for toddlers and kids ages 3–7”, so we list it for later.

Why it’s worth it

  • Five compartments, 2.4 cups
  • Tray is microwave and dishwasher safe
  • Rubber-coated edges
Worth noting: It is the bigger box, sized by its maker for ages 3 to 7, and it costs a little more than the Yumbox. Bentgo recommends hand-washing the outer shell, and it doesn’t keep food cold on its own.

The $0 version

A small lidded container you already own, inside any insulated bag. The USDA says insulated, soft-sided bags are best for keeping food cold, to pack at least two cold sources with perishable food, and that some foods need no cold source: whole fruits and vegetables, hard cheese, breads and crackers.

A tub from the cupboard and two ice packs.

What we would skip

Three things we’d leave on the shelf

They’re in every lunch-box aisle. Here’s why we’d pass.

Skip

A big-kid bento bought to grow into

Most of the popular kids’ boxes are sized and rated for preschool. Bentgo rates the Bentgo Kids for ages 3 to 7 (Bentgo). For a toddler, we’d start with a smaller box.

Skip

Juice, soup or runny dressing in a bento box

A bento lid seals thick foods, not liquids. Yumbox says the Snack is not intended for liquids such as juice or runny dressings (Yumbox). Use a bottle or an insulated food jar.

Skip

A perishable lunch with no cold source

The USDA says perishable food must be kept cold until lunchtime and to pack at least two cold sources, unless there’s a refrigerator to put it in on arrival.

Boxes we passed on

  • PackIt Freezable Snack Box. A top seller in Amazon’s search for toddler lunch boxes, but it’s a freezable insulated bag, not a divided box; the listing pitches it for adults and all ages.
  • b.box Snack Box. Its listing calls it ideal for toddler lunch on the go, so it was a close second. We couldn’t match the colour the Amazon listing ships to a maker photo on October 10, 2026.
  • melii Snackle Box. Six compartments and a hinged lid, but the listing gives no age, and on October 10, 2026 Amazon showed it as not yet in stock.

Questions parents ask

FAQ

What size lunch box does a toddler need?

A small one. The Yumbox Snack holds 2 cups in three sections (listing), and Yumbox calls it the ideal mini bento for toddlers. Bigger five-compartment boxes like the Bentgo Kids are rated by their maker for ages 3 to 7.

Can a toddler open a Yumbox?

Yumbox says the Snack’s easy-open latch is designed for toddlers and young kids. Practise opening and closing it at home before the first day.

How do I keep a toddler's lunch cold?

Use an insulated bag and at least two cold sources, such as two frozen gel packs, or a gel pack and a frozen bottle of water (USDA). If daycare has a fridge, store it there.

Is the Bentgo Kids lunch box OK for a 2-year-old?

Bentgo describes it as ideal for toddlers and kids ages 3 to 7, so we list it as the box for later, from 3.

Is the Yumbox dishwasher safe?

The removable tray is dishwasher safe on the top rack. Yumbox recommends hand-washing the outer box, which also preserves the seal.

Why trust Worth It

How we choose

Checked and sourcedEvery pick is checked against the maker's own age and weight limits and the CPSC recall database. Where safety guidance applies, we link the AAP, CPSC, FDA or NIH source right next to the advice.
The $0 option, alwaysMost problems have a $0 answer. It goes on the page, even when it costs us the sale.
A skip list with sourcesAdd-ons and traps we would leave on the shelf, with the guidance behind every safety call, plus the products we passed on and why.
Picked for an agePicks follow what babies actually do each month, not what is on sale this week.

We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.

We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We don’t print exact prices because they change daily. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.

For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
