Baby mittens and booties: the ones that stay on.

For a baby in a stroller or carrier, two things matter: warm hands and feet, and covers that don’t end up on the sidewalk. Both picks fasten above the wrist or ankle.

The short answer

Under the outer suit, dress your baby in several thin layers, then add a hat and hand and foot covers. The AAP says insulated boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat are essential in winter (AAP). For the hands we’d buy the JAN & JUL Toasty-Dry Waterproof Mittens; for the feet, the JAN & JUL Stay-Put Winter Booties. If the snowsuit has feet, the booties are optional.

On Oct 19, 2026 we checked both picks’ maker pages, live US listings, price bands and the CPSC recall database. See both side by side.

What we looked at

We held both picks to the same test: how they fasten, what keeps the cold and wet out, and what the maker actually claims.

Where a maker doesn’t claim something, like waterproofing, the table says so.

Fastens above the wrist or ankle

A cord, drawstring or tab that cinches, so the cover stays put.

What the maker claims for cold and wet

Waterproof only where the maker says so.

Sold by the maker

Both are sold on Amazon by their maker, JAN & JUL.

Why they made the list

For the hands

JAN & JUL Toasty-Dry Waterproof Mittens, Constellations, XS (0-2Y, no thumb)

Thumbless, waterproof, and cinched at the wrist and forearm so they stay on.

Checked Oct 19, 2026: price, stock, specs, recalls

Thumbless mittens with a wide cuff that opens over winter layers. JAN & JUL says the shell is DWR-coated and backed by an inner waterproof layer, the lining is fleece with 3M Thinsulate insulation, they’re temperature rated down to -15°C, they cinch at the wrist and forearm with one pull, and they clip together for storage (JAN & JUL). The XS size (0-2Y) is the one without a thumb.

Why it’s worth it

  • Waterproof layer under a DWR shell (JAN & JUL)
  • Cinches at wrist and forearm
  • Clip keeps the pair together
Worth noting: There is one thumbless baby size, XS for 0 to 2 years; from size S (2-4Y) they have a thumb. Thumbless also means no gripping, so they suit the stroller and carrier more than play.

Soft booties with a faux-fur lining and a windproof shell. JAN & JUL says an adjustable elastic drawstring at the ankle and a Velcro tab keep them on, the PU soles are non-slip and reinforced at the toe and heel, and they’re machine washable on gentle and air dry (JAN & JUL). Size S is for 3 to 12 months.

Why it’s worth it

  • Drawstring plus Velcro, to stay on
  • Faux-fur lining, windproof shell
  • Machine washable
Worth noting: They’re not sold as waterproof: JAN & JUL describes them for the stroller, the carrier and indoors. A toddler walking in snow or slush needs a waterproof boot.

The $0 version

A snowsuit or bunting with feet and fold-over mitten cuffs already covers both, so check what you own first. For a short walk with a baby who isn’t crawling, a second pair of socks over the first, tucked under the suit’s cuffs, is our $0 stand-in.

What we would skip

Three things to skip

Each one is common in winter. Here’s why we’d pass.

Skip

The puffy suit in the car seat

The AAP says bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, should not be worn under a car seat harness (AAP). Take the suit off for the car, then put a coat or blanket over the buckled straps.

Skip

One thick layer instead of several thin ones

The AAP says several thin layers help keep kids warm and dry (AAP).

Skip

Staying out in wet mittens or booties

The AAP says to change children out of any wet clothes right away (AAP). Soft booties that aren’t sold as waterproof are for the stroller and carrier, not for puddles.

What we passed on

  • Zutano Furry Fleece Booties with Grippers. Our email’s pick. In 2017 the CPSC recalled Zutano’s fleece gripper Cozie booties because the rubber grips can detach, a choking hazard (CPSC). The recall covered 2016 lots only, but the design is the same, so we chose booties without that history.
  • Stonz Snow Mitt Baby. Our earlier pick. On Oct 19, 2026 amazon.com showed the size we linked as currently unavailable, so we switched.
  • Stonz Puffer Booties. On Oct 12, 2026 amazon.com had them only in a toddler size, not a baby one.
  • N'Ice Caps fleece mittens, 2 pairs. The top result in Amazon’s search for baby winter mittens on Oct 12, 2026, sold by a third-party seller.

Questions parents ask

FAQ

Does my baby need mittens and booties in winter?

The AAP says insulated boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat are essential in winter, along with several thin layers (AAP). A snowsuit with feet and mitten cuffs can cover both.

How do I keep baby mittens on?

Pick a mitten that cinches above the wrist. The JAN & JUL mittens cinch at the wrist and forearm with one pull (JAN & JUL).

Are the JAN & JUL booties waterproof?

JAN & JUL doesn’t say so. It lists a windproof shell and a faux-fur lining, and describes them for the stroller, carrier and indoors (JAN & JUL).

Can my baby wear a snowsuit in the car seat?

No. The AAP says bulky clothing, including snowsuits, should not be worn under the harness (AAP).

How cold is too cold to go out?

The AAP says playing outside in temperatures or wind chills below -15°F should generally be avoided (AAP).

How we choose

Checked and sourcedEvery pick is checked against the maker's own age and weight limits and the CPSC recall database. Where safety guidance applies, we link the AAP, CPSC, FDA or NIH source right next to the advice.
The $0 option, alwaysMost problems have a $0 answer. It goes on the page, even when it costs us the sale.
A skip list with sourcesAdd-ons and traps we would leave on the shelf, with the guidance behind every safety call, plus the products we passed on and why.
Picked for an agePicks follow what babies actually do each month, not what is on sale this week.

We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.

We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We don’t print exact prices because they change daily. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.

For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
