- Blank fields mean we could not verify that detail, not that it does not exist.
Important
The consultants listed here are lactation professionals, not your baby’s medical team. For weight-gain concerns, jaundice, signs of dehydration, or any question about your baby’s health, speak to your midwife, family doctor or pediatrician. In an emergency call 911. IBCLCs work alongside your care team, not instead of it.
Common questions San Diego parents ask
How much does a lactation consultant cost in San Diego?
13 of the 21 consultants here publish a first-visit fee. Office visits start at $150 at Night & Day San Diego and run to $200 at Seaside Midwifery. Home visits run from $200 at Oceanside Lactation to $250 at Night & Day and Seaside Midwifery, and some practices add a travel fee. Virtual visits start at $100. Every figure is quoted exactly as the practice posted it; where a consultant does not publish fees, the field is blank.
Is a lactation consultant covered by insurance in San Diego?
Often, yes. San Diego Breastfeeding Center lists the longest in-network list here, including Aetna, Cigna, Kaiser, UnitedHealthcare and several Medi-Cal plans. Night & Day San Diego and Mamas & Milk list Aetna PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO and UCSD Managed Care. Cradle & Latch works through The Lactation Network, Wildflower, Milkwise and TRICARE. Check your own plan before you book.
Do San Diego lactation consultants do home visits?
Many do. Breastfeeding Consultants of San Diego, Mamas & Milk, Night & Day San Diego, Oceanside Lactation, Seaside Midwifery and Milky Way Lactation all describe home visits. Cradle & Latch lists home visits but its site currently says it is accepting virtual visits only. Office visits are centered on Mission Valley, with others in Encinitas and Solana Beach.
Is there lactation support in North County San Diego?
Yes. Eight consultants here are in coastal North County (Oceanside, Encinitas, Solana Beach) and three in inland North County (Escondido). Ten are in central San Diego. Filter by area before you shortlist.
What is the difference between an IBCLC and a CLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant has passed the IBLCE board exam and must recertify regularly. A Certified Lactation Counselor holds a shorter certificate. 19 of the 21 people on this page list the IBCLC credential. Michelle Ricketts and Colleen Wood list CLC, and both work inside IBCLC-led practices.
How did you choose which consultants to list?
We kept lactation professionals in private practice in San Diego County with a live practice website that names them. Each person was checked against that site for their credentials, base and fees.
How we checked this directory
