How Amsterdam parents choose
- A postpartum doula is non-medical support for rest, recovery, feeding and confidence after birth.
- Kraamzorg is your insured maternity care for roughly the first eight days; a doula is a private extra, often for the weeks after.
- Published hourly rates run from €52 to €65; packages from €197 to €1200 for two weeks.
- Every detail here is verbatim from the doula’s own site. A blank field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.
Important
Postpartum doulas provide non-medical practical and emotional support. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and they do not replace your kraamzorg, verloskundige, consultatiebureau or huisarts. For a medical concern about you or your baby, call your verloskundige or huisarts; in an emergency call 112. If you are struggling with your mood or having thoughts of harming yourself, call 113 (or 0800-0113, free).
Common questions Amsterdam parents ask
What does a postpartum doula do in Amsterdam?
A postpartum doula (kraamdoula) supports the whole household after birth: rest, recovery, feeding support, newborn care questions, meals, light household help and a calm person to talk to. The work is practical and non-medical. It sits alongside your regular kraamzorg, not instead of it.
How is a postpartum doula different from kraamzorg?
Every family in the Netherlands is entitled to kraamzorg: an insured maternity nurse (kraamverzorgende) who visits for roughly the first eight days and checks mother and baby. A postpartum doula is a private extra, often booked for the weeks after kraamzorg ends, and focuses on rest, recovery and confidence rather than medical checks.
How much does a postpartum doula cost in Amsterdam?
Seven of the eight doulas here publish a rate. Hourly rates run from €52 to €65 an hour. Packages range from €197 for a single postpartum home package to €599 and up for multi-visit support, €695 for twelve hours, and €1200 for two weeks. Each figure is quoted verbatim from the doula’s own site; where a doula does not publish a rate, the field is blank.
Is a postpartum doula covered by Dutch health insurance?
Usually not. Kraamzorg is insured, but a private postpartum doula is normally paid for yourself. Some supplementary policies reimburse specific services, so check your own policy. Where a doula prints her own note about reimbursement, we show it.
Can I find a postpartum doula who works in English?
Yes. Most doulas on this page work in English as well as Dutch, and Ombretta Dettori of Ayu Doula works in English and Italian. Each profile lists the languages the doula states.
When should I book a postpartum doula?
Many doulas take a limited number of families per month, so book in the second or early third trimester if you can. Some keep space for last-minute requests. A free introductory call is common and is the fastest way to check fit and availability.
