Newborns are noisy, wriggly sleepers, and most of that movement comes from active sleep, a normal stage where your baby twitches, grunts, and even briefly opens their eyes while genuinely asleep.

Active sleep is the infant version of REM sleep, and it makes up roughly half of a newborn’s sleep in the early weeks. Learning to recognize it can stop you from picking up a baby who was never really awake.

What Is Active Sleep?

Sleep is not one flat state. Babies, like adults, move through cycles of lighter and deeper sleep. In newborns those cycles are built from two main stages: active sleep and quiet sleep. It may also be protective. Because active sleep is light, babies rouse more easily, which makes it simpler to wake for the frequent feeds a newborn needs. That lightness is normal and expected in the early weeks, not a sign that anything is wrong.

Active Sleep vs Waking: How to Tell the Difference

A few signs point beyond ordinary active sleep and deserve a call to your pediatrician: pauses in breathing that last longer than about 20 seconds or come with a color change, rhythmic jerking that continues after you gently hold the limb still, blue lips, or movements paired with poor feeding and unusual sleepiness. These are uncommon, but worth ruling out.

When Does Active Sleep Decrease?

Active sleep fades gradually rather than switching off. Around 3 to 4 months, more mature sleep stages emerge, cycles lengthen, and the share of REM-like sleep begins to fall.
