How London parents choose

  • IBCLC is the highest lactation credential — extensive supervised clinical hours plus a board exam, re-certified every five years.
  • NHS feeding support is free through your midwife, health visitor and local drop-ins; the National Breastfeeding Helpline is 0300 100 0212.
  • Private visits in London commonly run from about £100 online to £150–£250 for a home visit; tongue-tie division is priced separately.
  • Every credential, fee and quote here is verbatim from the consultant’s own site. A blank field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.

Important

The consultants listed here are lactation professionals, not your baby’s medical team. For weight-gain concerns, jaundice, signs of dehydration, or any question about your baby’s health, speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP, or call NHS 111. In an emergency call 999. IBCLCs work alongside NHS care, not instead of it.

Common questions London parents ask

How much does a London lactation consultant cost?

Private consultations in London commonly run from around £100 for an online session to £150–£250 for a home visit, with tongue-tie assessment and division priced separately and higher. Rates vary a lot by area and by how long the visit lasts. Where a consultant publishes her fees on her own site we reproduce them verbatim in pounds; where she does not, the field is left blank rather than estimated.

Is breastfeeding support free on the NHS?

Yes, alongside private care. Your midwife team supports feeding in the first days, your health visitor takes over after that, and most areas run free infant feeding clinics or breastfeeding drop-ins. There are also free national helplines: the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212, plus the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and La Leche League GB. Parents usually go private for speed, for a longer appointment at home, or for a complex problem.

What does IBCLC actually mean?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant — the highest lactation credential there is. It requires extensive supervised clinical hours plus a board exam set by the IBLCE, and re-certification every five years. Many UK IBCLCs are also registered midwives, nurses or doctors. We reproduce each consultant’s stated credentials verbatim so you can judge fit for yourself.

Can a lactation consultant help over video?

Yes. Most consultants on this page offer online consultations, which work well for latch coaching, supply worries, pumping and bottle transitions, and going back to work. That means a consultant across London is a realistic option wherever you live. We mark who offers virtual support.

Who divides a tongue-tie in London, and do I need an IBCLC first?

Several consultants on this page are trained tongue-tie practitioners and some work alongside a paediatric surgeon. A feeding assessment normally comes first: not every feeding problem is a tongue-tie, and many resolve with positioning and attachment support alone. NHS tongue-tie clinics exist but waiting times vary by trust, which is why many families go private. Fees for assessment and division are listed here exactly as each practice publishes them.

When should I see a lactation consultant?

Common reasons are painful latch, low or oversupply, slow weight gain, tongue-tie questions, pumping, bottle refusal and weaning. Earlier is usually easier and many problems settle in one or two visits. If your baby is losing weight, feeding fewer than eight times in 24 hours, or producing few wet nappies, contact your midwife, health visitor or GP first.
