Praying for adult children is harder than praying for small ones. The worries get bigger, the influence gets smaller, and there is no longer any version where you can simply pick them up and carry them out of the situation.

Below are 30 prayers for grown sons and daughters, covering the things parents of adults actually lie awake about: their marriages, their money, their health, their faith, their choices, and the stretches when they do not call.

None of these prayers assume the relationship is easy or that your child is doing well. Several assume the opposite, because that is often when parents start praying most.

Short Prayers for a Grown Son or Daughter

Lord, bless my child today, wherever they are. Amen.
Father, go with them into whatever today holds. Amen.
God, they are grown and I still worry. Take it from me. Amen.
Lord, keep them safe, keep them well, keep them close to You. Amen.
Father, let them know the door here is always open. Amen.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.3 John 1:4

If you only say one today

God, they are grown and I still worry. Take it from me. Amen. The central task of parenting an adult is handing over control you no longer have. This prayer does exactly that.

Prayers for Their Work and Direction

Lord, my child is lost about what to do with their life. Give them direction and give me the restraint not to hand them mine. Amen.
Father, they lost their job and their confidence with it. Restore both. Amen.
God, they are working too hard and I can hear it in their voice. Give them rest and the sense to take it. Amen.
Lord, bless the work of their hands and let it mean something to them. Amen.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.Proverbs 16:3

Prayers for Their Marriage and Relationships

Lord, bless my child’s marriage. Protect it in the ordinary weeks as well as the hard ones. Amen.
Father, their marriage is struggling and I can see it. Give me wisdom about when to speak and when to stay quiet. Amen.
God, thank You for the person my child chose. Help me love them properly and not as a project. Amen.
Lord, my child is lonely and wants a partner. Meet that longing in Your timing, and comfort them in the waiting. Amen.
Father, their relationship ended and they are in pieces. Be near. Amen.
Lord, help me be a good parent-in-law: warm, useful, and out of the way. Amen.

Prayers for a Child Making Choices That Frighten You

These are the prayers most parents of adults are actually looking for, and the hardest to write honestly.

Lord, my child is making choices I cannot watch and cannot stop. Keep them alive. Keep the door open. Amen.
Father, addiction has hold of my child. I cannot fight it for them. Give them one moment of clarity that turns things. Amen.
God, I am frightened for them and exhausted by the fear. Carry the part I cannot. Amen.
Lord, teach me the difference between helping and rescuing, and give me the strength to do the first and stop the second. Amen.
Father, if there are consequences coming that I cannot spare them, let those consequences teach rather than destroy. Amen.
Lord, when they come back, let me be the kind of parent who is easy to come back to. Amen.
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him.Luke 15:20

If addiction or mental health is the issue

Praying for an adult child in crisis is compatible with getting real support for yourself. In the US, SAMHSA runs a free confidential helpline at 1-800-662-4357, and family support groups exist specifically for parents in this position. You are allowed to need help too.

Prayers for Distance and Estrangement

Lord, my child does not call and I do not know what I did. Show me if there is something to mend. Amen.
Father, we have not spoken in a long time. Keep them safe and keep my heart from hardening. Amen.
God, if I hurt them in ways I did not see, open my eyes and give me the humility to say so plainly. Amen.
Lord, help me love them at this distance without resentment. Amen.
Father, I am waiting. Help me wait well, without punishing them for the waiting. Amen.
Lord, they live far away and the calls are short. Fill in what the distance takes. Amen.

How to Pray for an Adult Child Without Trying to Control Them

The hardest thing about praying for grown children is that prayer can quietly become another way of managing them. It is worth noticing when a prayer is really a plan you would like God to implement on your behalf.

  • Pray for their wellbeing, not your preferred outcome. ‘Keep them safe and give them wisdom’ rather than ‘make them take the job I would take’.
  • Pray for the relationship as much as the situation. An open door is often more valuable than being proved right.
  • Pray for your own restraint. Most parents of adults need this more than they need anything changed in the child.
  • Pray specifically but hold it loosely. Name the real worry, then deliberately hand it over rather than rehearsing it.
  • Do not use prayer as a message. Praying at someone in their hearing is rarely received as love.
  • Keep going when nothing visibly changes. These are long prayers, measured in years.

A useful test: if the prayer would embarrass you if your adult child overheard it, it may be closer to commentary than intercession. Prayers that would make them feel loved if overheard are usually the right ones.

Praying Through Estrangement and Long Silences

Estrangement between parents and adult children is far more common than most families realise, and the silence around it makes it lonelier than it needs to be. Prayer in this situation has to do something specific: keep your heart soft without demanding that the other person move.

That means praying for their genuine wellbeing rather than for their return, and asking honestly to see your own part. Many parents find the most difficult and most fruitful prayer is some version of ‘show me what I cannot see’. It is worth praying even when you believe the estrangement is unjust, because a hardened heart makes reconciliation harder if the chance ever comes.

It also means accepting that some doors stay shut, and that this is not always a verdict on your prayers. Praying well and the relationship not being restored can both be true at once.

You are allowed to need support too

Parents of estranged or struggling adult children often carry it silently for years. Family support groups exist for exactly this, and speaking to a counsellor about it is a reasonable step, not an admission of failure.

Prayers for Their Faith

Lord, my child has walked away from faith. I am not going to argue them back. Meet them Yourself. Amen.
Father, let them encounter something they cannot explain away. Amen.
God, help me show them something worth wanting rather than something worth arguing with. Amen.
Lord, thank You that my child’s faith is not my responsibility to manufacture. Amen.
Father, keep me praying for this long after it stops feeling productive. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good prayer for adult children?

A good prayer for an adult child asks for protection and wisdom rather than for specific outcomes, and usually includes something about the parent letting go. A short version: ‘Lord, keep them safe, keep them well, keep them close to You, and take the worry I cannot carry. Amen.’

How do I pray for a grown child who is making bad choices?

Pray honestly, and pray for the relationship as much as the behaviour. Many parents find the most useful prayer is not that the choices change immediately but that the child stays safe and the door between you stays open. Praying for your own wisdom about when to speak and when to stay quiet matters just as much.

What can I pray when my adult child will not speak to me?

Pray for their wellbeing, for insight into anything you may need to repair, and for your own heart not to harden while you wait. Estrangement prayers work better when they include asking to see your own part clearly, rather than only asking for the other person to change.

Is it normal to still worry about grown children?

Yes, and most parents report the worry changes rather than fades: it gets bigger in stakes and smaller in influence. Prayer is one of the few things that fits that shape, because it is an action you can take when there is genuinely nothing practical left to do.

What prayer can I say for my adult child’s faith?

Most parents pray that their child would encounter God directly rather than be argued into belief. Something like: ‘Lord, I am not going to argue them back. Meet them Yourself.’ It also helps to pray for your own patience, since this is usually a long prayer rather than a quick one.
