Is the Toniebox worth it? Yes, if you start with one figure.

A Toniebox is a screen-free speaker a toddler can run alone. Toniebox 2 is rated from age 1. The original is rated from 3, and Amazon no longer sells it itself. The box is the easy part. The figures are where the money goes.

The short answer

It’s worth it if your child will use it most days, and you start with the figure in the box. Under three, buy the Toniebox 2 Starter Set: Tonies rates it from age 1, and a toddler can start and stop it alone. The original Toniebox 1 is rated 3+, and on October 12, 2026 amazon.com had no Toniebox 1 starter set sold by Amazon, only third-party offers at about $130, so Toniebox 2 is the one box we’d buy at any age. Tonies still lists the original at $99.99 on its own site. Before you buy, try the free version first: a library audiobook app and any speaker you own.

On October 3, 2026 we checked both boxes’ maker age ratings, and on October 12, 2026 the live US listings, price band and the CPSC recall database.

Before you buy

What we looked at

A Toniebox has one job: play songs and stories without a screen, controlled by a child. The question isn’t whether it does that well. It’s whether your child will use it enough to justify the price, and which box fits their age.

Ages matter more here than with most toys, because Tonies sells two boxes with two ratings, and the figures carry their own labels. We went with the stricter label every time.

The maker's age, and the listing's warning

Toniebox 2 is rated 1+ by Tonies and its listing has no small-parts warning. Toniebox 1 is rated 3+. Where a figure’s listing warns ‘not for children under 3’, we treat it as 3+ (CPSC).

A child can run it alone

Figure on to play, figure off to stop. That independence is most of the appeal at this age.

What it really costs

The box is one purchase. Figures are an ongoing one. We’d start with the figure in the box and add slowly.

A soft, squishy cube with no screen. Your child puts a Tonie figure on top to play it and lifts it off to stop; pressing an ear changes the volume and tapping the sides changes tracks (listing). Tonies rates Toniebox 2 from age 1 and calls it “1+ certified”. It adds a sleep timer with a light and a sunrise alarm, set from the tonies app, and the starter set comes with one figure of children’s songs (Tonies).

Why it’s worth it

  • Rated from age 1 by Tonies
  • A one-year-old can start and stop it alone
  • Sleep timer and sunrise alarm in the app
Worth noting: It’s Premium-priced for one figure, and the figures are where the cost keeps coming. On amazon.com, the extra figures we checked are labeled “Not for children under 3”, so until three the figure in the box is the only one we’d hand over. You need Wi-Fi to set it up, and the power adapter is sold separately (listing).

Safety check

  • No recalls found in the CPSC recall database (searched by product name, Oct 12, 2026). Tonies’ one CPSC recall on record, in March 2022, covered tonies Blocks sold on tonies.com, not the Toniebox.
  • The charging cable is 8.6 inches long, which the listing says is “to meet child safety standards for little listeners aged 1+”. Charge it where a toddler can’t reach the cable.

The $0 version

A library card gets you free children’s audiobooks through your library’s app, and any old phone or speaker plays them. Put the device out of reach and let your child ask for ‘the bear story’. It’s less independent than a box they control, but it costs nothing to find out whether your child likes listening before you buy a box.

Your own voice, singing the same four songs, still counts.

What we would skip

Four things to skip

Each one is bought often. Here’s why we wouldn’t.

Skip

A big library of figures up front

Children replay favorites. One or two figures get most of the listening, so add slowly and let your child’s requests decide.

Skip

Extra figures for an under-3

The extra Tonies we checked, including the Ms. Rachel figure and the My First Tonies set, are sold as 1+ on tonies.com but carry ‘Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.’ on amazon.com. We go with the warning.

Skip

Audio as a replacement for reading together

A Toniebox is a good extra. We’d still read with them every day; a box can’t stop to point at the picture or answer a question.

Skip

A toddler tablet, or an old phone with videos on it

If the point is screen-free listening, a screen undoes it. The library app on a phone you keep is the cheaper way to get audio.

What we passed on

  • Yoto Mini (2024 Edition). The main rival. Rated for 3 to 12, and an earlier Yoto Mini (SKU PRPLXX00860) was recalled in 2024 for burn and fire hazards. We couldn’t confirm which version the listing ships.
  • Tonies Ms. Rachel figure. Number 3 in Amazon’s Storytelling Toys category on October 3, 2026. Tonies sells it as 1+, but the amazon.com listing says ‘Not for children under 3 yrs.’
  • My First Tonies Construction Set. Three soft vehicle figures sold as 1+ on tonies.com. Same catch: the amazon.com listing carries an under-3 small-parts warning.

Questions parents ask

FAQ

Is the Toniebox worth it?

It’s worth it if your child will use it most days. It’s screen-free, a toddler can run it alone, and Toniebox 2 adds a sleep timer and sunrise alarm. It isn’t worth it if you’ll feel pushed into buying figure after figure; start with the one in the box.

What age is the Toniebox for?

Toniebox 2 is rated from age 1 by Tonies. The original Toniebox 1 is rated 3+ (Tonies), and its amazon.com listing carries a small-parts warning for under-3s.

What's the difference between Toniebox 1 and Toniebox 2?

Toniebox 2 is rated from age 1, lists about 9 hours of battery, charges by USB-C cable and adds a sleep timer with a light and a sunrise alarm. Toniebox 1 is rated 3+, lists up to 7 hours and charges on a station. On October 12, 2026, amazon.com had no Toniebox 1 starter set sold by Amazon; Tonies lists it at $99.99 on its own site.

Do old Tonies work on Toniebox 2?

Yes. Tonies says all Tonies work with Toniebox 2 (Tonies).

Is the Yoto Mini better?

It’s a different design: cards instead of figures, and Yoto rates it for 3 to 12, so it’s not for a toddler. An earlier Yoto Mini (SKU PRPLXX00860) was recalled for burn and fire hazards, and we couldn’t confirm from the listing which version ships now, so it isn’t one of our picks.

Why trust Worth It

How we choose

Checked and sourcedEvery pick is checked against the maker's own age and weight limits and the CPSC recall database. Where safety guidance applies, we link the AAP, CPSC, FDA or NIH source right next to the advice.
The $0 option, alwaysMost problems have a $0 answer. It goes on the page, even when it costs us the sale.
A skip list with sourcesAdd-ons and traps we would leave on the shelf, with the guidance behind every safety call, plus the products we passed on and why.
Picked for an agePicks follow what babies actually do each month, not what is on sale this week.

We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.

We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We don’t print exact prices because they change daily. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.

For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
