Crayons for toddlers: one box that fits a small fist, and plain paper.

Many crayons sold as toddler crayons are rated for 3 and up. We found one box whose maker rates it from age 1, so this list has one pick.

The short answer

A toddler needs one box of chubby crayons and a lot of paper, and that’s the whole decision. We picked Honeysticks Originals: its maker rates them for ages 1 to 3, and the listing says 1+. It’s in our Budget band.

We looked for a second box and didn’t find one we could stand behind: the other toddler crayons we checked were rated 3+, had no maker page we could open, or were sold only by a third party. On October 10, 2026 we checked the pick’s live US listing, price band and the CPSC recall database.

Before you buy

What a first crayon has to do

A common mistake is buying the crayon box from the school aisle. Most of it is rated for 3 and up, and a one-year-old holds a crayon in a fist, not a pencil grip.

We hold every candidate to the same things: a maker’s age rating that starts at 1, a shape for a fist grip, what it’s made of, and who sells it on Amazon.

Rated from age 1

An age from the maker that starts at 1, and no small-parts warning on the listing.

A fist-sized shape

Short and thick, so it’s gripped in the palm and is hard to snap.

Sold by Amazon or the maker

So the box that arrives is the one the maker describes.

Why it made the list

The first crayon

Honeysticks Originals Beeswax Crayons, 12 pack

Short, chubby beeswax crayons sized for a one-year-old’s fist.

Price band: BudgetCheck price on Amazon

Checked Oct 12, 2026: price, stock, specs, recalls

Honeysticks says its Originals are “Ideal for toddlers aged 1-3”, with a short, stubby shape that is easy to grip and hard to break. Each crayon is 55 mm long and 20 mm across, made from beeswax with food-grade pigments, and the maker says they’re non-toxic, with no paraffin wax (Honeysticks). The amazon.com listing gives the age as 1+.

Why it’s worth it

  • Rated by its maker for ages 1 to 3
  • Chubby shape for a fist grip
  • Twelve colours
Worth noting: At about $23 for 12 it costs several times a box of ordinary crayons. Beeswax is softer than paraffin, so the colour goes on lighter on some paper, and the crayons have no wrapper, so small hands get waxy.

The best-selling crayon box, for now

Crayola Mini Twistables (50 count) led Amazon’s search for toddler crayons on October 10, 2026, and its listing title says 3+. For a one-year-old, we’d buy only a box whose maker states an age that starts at 1.

Crayons we passed on

  • My First Crayola Palm-Grip Crayons. Egg-shaped crayons for a toddler’s palm, but on October 10, 2026 the Amazon buy box was a third-party seller, at $16.40 for six.
  • Crayola Large Egg Crayons. Sold by Amazon, with “Ages 1+” in the title, but Crayola had no product page we could open to confirm the age or specs.
  • Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayons. Jumbo triangular beeswax crayons, but the listing describes them as crayons for toddlers 3+.
  • Crayola Mini Twistables, 50 count. The best seller in Amazon’s search for toddler crayons, but its listing title says 3+.

Questions parents ask

FAQ

When can a toddler start using crayons?

Honeysticks rates its Originals for toddlers aged 1 to 3 (Honeysticks). Many other crayon boxes are rated 3 and up, so check the age on the box.

Are beeswax crayons safe for toddlers?

Honeysticks says its crayons are non-toxic and made with food-grade pigments. They’re still not food: we’d keep crayon time at the table, with you there.

Why is there only one pick?

Because the count is a promise. The other toddler crayons we checked on October 10, 2026 were rated 3+, had no maker page we could open, or were sold only by a third party on Amazon.

What paper should a toddler draw on?

Big, plain paper taped to the table, so it doesn’t slide. We’d skip the easel paper roll we checked, because its listing says not for children under 3.

How we choose

Checked and sourcedEvery pick is checked against the maker's own age and weight limits and the CPSC recall database. Where safety guidance applies, we link the AAP, CPSC, FDA or NIH source right next to the advice.
The $0 option, alwaysMost problems have a $0 answer. It goes on the page, even when it costs us the sale.
A skip list with sourcesAdd-ons and traps we would leave on the shelf, with the guidance behind every safety call, plus the products we passed on and why.
Picked for an agePicks follow what babies actually do each month, not what is on sale this week.

We don’t run a product lab, and we won’t pretend we do. Worth It picks are researched from makers’ instructions, retailer listings and official safety guidance, not lab-tested. Each is chosen for a specific age and a specific job, the way a friend a couple of years ahead of you would choose: a few products, each with a reason, and an honest note on what could go wrong.

We check every listing on amazon.com for a live US offer and sort it into a price band: Budget (under $30), Mid-range ($30 to $100) or Premium (over $100). We don’t print exact prices because they change daily. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission. That pays for this, and it never decides what makes the list.

For safety, we search the CPSC recall database by product name, and we note the US safety standard the maker says a product meets. Where the maker doesn’t say, we tell you what the law requires for that kind of product. The JPMA’s certification list (now run by the Baby Safety Alliance) isn’t publicly searchable, so we only mention certification when the maker states it. Specs come from the maker first, and the Amazon listing second.
