How DC parents choose
- Postpartum doula support is non-medical. It covers newborn care, feeding help, recovery support and rest, not diagnosis or treatment.
- Nine of the ten publish an hourly postpartum rate, from $35 to $75 an hour, with one range reaching $165. Every figure is quoted verbatim.
- Some doulas here take DC Medicaid, and one offers a Tricare and Medicaid consult track. Ask before you book.
- Six are based in DC, two in the Maryland suburbs and two in Northern Virginia. Filter by area before you shortlist.
- A blank pricing, review or photo field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.
Important
Postpartum doulas provide non-medical practical and emotional support. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and they are not a substitute for your OB, midwife, or pediatrician. If you have symptoms of a postpartum medical complication, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, contact your provider or call or text 988 right away.
Common questions DC parents ask
How much does a postpartum doula cost in Washington DC?
Nine of the ten doulas here publish an hourly postpartum rate. Posted rates run from $35 to $75 an hour, with one Arlington doula quoting a range up to $165. Several offer a sliding scale, payment plans, or discounted overnight and multi-visit packages. Every figure is quoted verbatim from the doula’s own site or their DoulaMatch profile; where nothing is published the field is blank.
Does DC Medicaid cover a postpartum doula?
DC Medicaid does cover doula services, and some doulas on this page say they take it. Allyson Winburn states she is approved in DC to serve families covered by DC Medicaid through most MCOs, and Dawn Smith lists two DC Medicaid plans on her DoulaMatch profile. Alyssa Coss offers a consult track for Tricare and Medicaid clients. Confirm your plan with the doula before booking.
What does a postpartum doula do?
A postpartum doula provides non-medical support at home after birth: newborn care, feeding help, rest for the birthing parent, light household tasks, and emotional support. Day shifts and overnights are both common, and several doulas here are also lactation counselors. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Do these doulas cover Maryland and Northern Virginia?
Yes. Six are based in DC itself, two in the Maryland suburbs (Bowie and Upper Marlboro), and two in Northern Virginia (Arlington and Herndon). Most state a travel radius or list the counties they serve, so filter by area first.
When should I book a postpartum doula?
Many families book during the third trimester, because the most in-demand doulas fill their calendars weeks ahead and some limit how many families they take each month. It is still worth asking after birth; several doulas here offer single visits or hourly shifts without a long contract.
How were these doulas chosen?
Each one is listed as a postpartum doula on DoulaMatch with a DC-area service ZIP, runs their own practice with a live website, and states a DC, Maryland or Virginia base on that site. Doula agencies and agency owners were left out of this page; it lists individual doulas only.
