How DC parents choose

  • These are non-clinical parenting coaches: they work with parents and do not diagnose or treat children.
  • No BCBAs, ABA providers, psychologists or clinical therapists are listed. Several DC-area ‘parent coaching’ practices we found are licensed counseling practices and were excluded.
  • If behavior is unsafe, sudden, or flagged by school, start with your pediatrician, not a coach.
  • The four are certified through the Parent Coaching Institute (two), the Jai Institute for Parenting, and the Positive Discipline Association.

Important

Everyone here is listed for non-clinical parenting or behavior coaching. In that role they do not diagnose, they do not treat, and they do not provide ABA or any other clinical intervention, even where a coach also holds a separate professional licence. Coaching is support for parents, not treatment for children. If your child’s behavior is putting them or anyone else at risk, or you suspect an underlying condition, start with your pediatrician, who can refer you on.

Common questions DC parents ask

What does a child behavior coach actually do?

A DC-area child behavior coach works with the parent, not the child. They help you read what is driving a behavior, then give you concrete things to say and do around tantrums, boundaries, bedtime, school issues, sibling conflict and big feelings. They are coaches and educators, not clinicians, and they do not diagnose or treat.

Is a behavior coach the same as a BCBA or an ABA provider?

No, and this directory deliberately excludes them. BCBAs and ABA providers deliver a clinical behavioral intervention, usually to the child. The coaches here work with parents on everyday parenting and are not acting as clinicians. If you are looking for a clinical behavioral assessment, ask your pediatrician for a referral rather than using this page.

When should I speak to a clinician instead of a coach?

Speak to your pediatrician first if your child’s behavior is unsafe to themselves or others, if it appeared suddenly or changed sharply, if it is badly affecting eating or sleeping, if school has raised a formal concern, or if you suspect a developmental or mental-health condition. A coach can complement clinical care but is not a substitute for an assessment.

How much does a parenting coach cost in the DC area?

Only one of the four coaches here publishes rates: Pascale Brady’s weekly Parenting Hour drop-in group on Zoom is $25 per session, and her individual coaching packages start at $645 a month. Cindi Copeland and Julie Murphy both offer a free first conversation, and Tracy Labrie offers a complimentary discovery call. The other pricing fields are blank rather than estimated.

Do these coaches work over video?

Yes. Tracy Labrie runs her one-to-one programs entirely as virtual calls, Julie Murphy meets clients virtually from anywhere, and Pascale Brady works by phone, Zoom or in person. Parent coaching translates well to video because the work is a conversation with you about what happened at home, so a coach in Maryland can work just as well with a family in Northern Virginia or the District.
