Islandwide home visits postpartum doulas (10)

How Singapore parents choose

  • Nine of the ten are on the Doulas of Singapore member roster, a non-profit network of independently trained doulas; the tenth, Four Trimesters founder Ginny Phang-Davey, is a DONA-certified birth and postpartum doula.
  • Fees are shown exactly as published, in Singapore dollars. Three of the ten publish prices; the rest quote on request.
  • Between them they work in French, Spanish, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin as well as English.
  • A postpartum doula is not a confinement nanny: most here visit for set sessions rather than living in.

Important

Postpartum doulas provide non-medical practical and emotional support. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and they are not a substitute for your obstetrician, midwife, polyclinic or paediatrician. If you have symptoms of a postpartum medical complication, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, contact your doctor or go to the nearest A&E right away.

Common questions Singapore parents ask

How much does a postpartum doula cost in Singapore?

Three of the ten doulas here publish fees, quoted verbatim in Singapore dollars. Charlotte Dumaine lists postpartum home visits from 220 SGD and lactation home visits from 250 SGD. Ginny Phang-Davey lists a postnatal breastfeeding home visit at $298 and clinic appointments from $98 for 30 minutes. Full birth doula packages that include postpartum visits run from 2,300 SGD (Charlotte Dumaine) to S$2,800 (Sulin Corella). The others quote on request, so their price fields are blank.

Is a postpartum doula the same as a confinement nanny?

No. A confinement nanny usually lives in for the first month and takes on baby care, cooking and housework. The doulas here mostly visit for set sessions: recovery and feeding support, newborn care guidance and emotional support. SEYOL also offers traditional Indian postpartum massage, binding and herbal baths. Ginny Phang-Davey states that she does not offer household help or overnight care.

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula provides non-medical support at home after birth: feeding help, newborn care guidance, recovery support, a birth debrief and emotional support. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Can I find a doula who speaks my language?

Yes. Charlotte Dumaine, Emeline Hare and Tania Stephan Gowrishankar work in French, Sulin Corella in French and Spanish, Jemma and Janet Francis and Rizwana Begum in Tamil, Hidya Sahid in Malay, and Linda Tan in Mandarin, all alongside English.

Are these doulas registered with Singapore hospitals?

Hospital rules differ. Doulas of Singapore lists hospital registrations on its member cards, and Hidya Sahid says she supports births at Mt Elizabeth, Raffles, NUH, TMC and KKH. Ask any doula which hospitals she is registered with before you book, especially for birth support.
