How Bay Area parents choose
- Every consultant listed was checked against their own website one by one. Sixteen entries from the source research were dropped, including two that turned out not to be in the Bay Area at all.
- Published fees range from about $100 an hour virtual to $350 for an in-home initial visit. Every price is quoted verbatim; blank means nothing is published.
- Insurance is the biggest cost lever here. Seventeen consultants publish their insurance arrangements, many through The Lactation Network.
- The Bay Area is wide. Filter by region before you shortlist, and check each consultant’s stated travel radius.
- Blank fields mean we could not verify that detail, not that it does not exist. Half the photos on this page are deliberately blank rather than show a stock image or someone else’s face.
Good to know
Most feeding concerns are easier to solve early. If you are in pain, worried about weight gain, or planning a return to work, a single virtual visit often sorts it out. Your pediatrician is always a good first stop for medical questions.
Common questions Bay Area parents ask
How much does a lactation consultant cost in the Bay Area?
Published fees on this page run from about $100 an hour for a virtual consultation to $350 for a comprehensive in-home initial visit, with most in-home initial consultations between $250 and $325 and follow-ups between $150 and $300. Several consultants add a travel fee outside a stated radius. Every figure here is quoted verbatim from that consultant’s own site; where nothing is published the field is blank rather than estimated.
Does insurance cover a lactation consultant in California?
Often, yes. The Affordable Care Act requires most plans to cover lactation support, and many Bay Area IBCLCs bill through The Lactation Network or are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield / Anthem, United Healthcare or Sutter Health. Seventeen of the consultants on this page publish their insurance arrangements, quoted verbatim on their profiles. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so confirm before booking.
What is an IBCLC?
The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant credential is the highest lactation qualification, requiring supervised clinical hours and a board exam. It is not the same as a CLC or CLEC, which are shorter counsellor certifications. Each profile on this page states the credential exactly as that consultant publishes it, so you can tell the difference at a glance.
Do Bay Area lactation consultants come to your home?
Most do, usually within a stated radius, and several charge a travel fee beyond it. Home visits generally cost $50 to $100 more than the same consultation done virtually. Nearly everyone here also offers telehealth, which handles latch coaching, supply concerns, pumping and bottle transitions well.
When should I see a lactation consultant?
Common reasons are painful latch, low or oversupply concerns, slow weight gain, tongue-tie questions, mastitis, pumping and bottle refusal, returning to work, and weaning. Earlier is usually easier, and several consultants on this page offer a free short discovery call first to work out whether a full consultation is needed.
How do I choose between the consultants on this page?
Start with geography, because the Bay Area is wide and most consultants state a travel radius: San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, the South Bay and the North Bay are a long drive apart. Then check whether they take your insurance, since that changes the cost more than anything else here. Then look at whether they hold the IBCLC credential and whether they have a specific interest, such as multiples, exclusive pumping or induced lactation.
