How Manchester parents choose
- IBCLC is the highest lactation credential: supervised clinical hours plus a board exam, re-certified every five years.
- NHS feeding support is free through your midwife, health visitor and local infant feeding teams; the National Breastfeeding Helpline is 0300 100 0212.
- All five consultants here publish their fees. Home visits run £125 to £250; tongue-tie division is priced separately.
- Every credential and fee here is verbatim from the consultant’s own site. A blank field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.
Important
The consultants listed here are lactation professionals, not your baby’s medical team. For weight-gain concerns, jaundice, signs of dehydration, or any question about your baby’s health, speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP, or call NHS 111. In an emergency call 999. IBCLCs work alongside NHS care, not instead of it.
Common questions Manchester parents ask
How much does a Manchester lactation consultant cost?
Every consultant on this page publishes her fees. A home visit for feeding support runs from £125 to £250, and a consultation at a practitioner’s own clinic or home from £100 to £150. Follow-ups are £50 to £100, and online or antenatal sessions start at £50. Tongue-tie division is priced separately. Each figure is quoted verbatim from the consultant’s own site.
Is breastfeeding support free on the NHS in Greater Manchester?
Yes, alongside private care. Your midwife team supports feeding in the first days and your health visitor takes over after that, and the local NHS trusts run infant feeding teams and tongue-tie clinics. The National Breastfeeding Helpline is free on 0300 100 0212. Parents usually go private for speed, for a longer appointment at home, or for a complex problem.
What does IBCLC actually mean?
IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, the highest lactation credential. It requires supervised clinical hours plus a board exam set by the IBLCE, with re-certification every five years. Four of the five practitioners here are IBCLCs; the fifth is a registered midwife and tongue-tie practitioner who, per her own site, is due to sit the exam. We reproduce each person’s stated credentials verbatim.
Who divides a tongue-tie privately in Greater Manchester?
Three of the five people on this page are tongue-tie practitioners: Paula O’Reilly does assessment and division at home, and Fiona Munro-Muotune and Tara Kennedy divide tongue-ties at their CQC-regulated clinics in Hale and Hyde. A feeding assessment normally comes first, because not every feeding problem is a tongue-tie.
Can a lactation consultant help online?
Yes, for many problems. Several consultants here offer online or video sessions, which work well for antenatal preparation, supply worries and pumping questions. Hands-on latch help and tongue-tie assessment need an in-person visit.
When should I see a lactation consultant?
Common reasons are painful latch, low or oversupply, slow weight gain, tongue-tie questions, pumping, bottle refusal and weaning. Earlier is usually easier. If your baby is losing weight, feeding fewer than eight times in 24 hours, or producing few wet nappies, contact your midwife, health visitor or GP first.
