How London parents choose
- Postnatal doula support is non-medical. It covers newborn care, feeding help, recovery support and practical household work, not diagnosis or treatment.
- It is privately funded — the NHS does not provide doulas, though your midwife and health visitor are free and work alongside one.
- Solo doula or agency is the first real decision. Agencies offer backup cover and overnight teams; a solo doula offers continuity with one person who knows your house.
- Every detail here is verbatim from the doula’s own site. A blank pricing or review field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.
Important
Postnatal doulas provide non-medical practical and emotional support. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and they are not a substitute for your midwife, health visitor, or GP. If you have symptoms of a postnatal medical complication, ring your maternity unit or GP, or call 111. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call 999 or the Samaritans free on 116 123.
Common questions London parents ask
What does a London postnatal doula actually do?
A postnatal doula supports the whole household in the weeks after birth. That usually means newborn care and feeding support, helping you rest, light meal preparation and tidying, sibling support, and being a calm, informed person to ask questions. The work is practical and non-medical, which is what separates a doula from a midwife or a maternity nurse.
How much does a postnatal doula cost in London?
Rates vary widely across London and many doulas quote packages or blocks of hours rather than a flat hourly rate. Where a doula publishes pricing on her own site we reproduce it verbatim in pounds; where she does not, the field is left blank rather than estimated. Doula UK publishes indicative national ranges, and most doulas offer a free introductory call, which is the fastest way to get a real number for your situation.
What is the difference between a postnatal doula and a maternity nurse?
A maternity nurse is usually hired to take charge of the baby, often overnight and often live-in, and tends to work to a routine. A postnatal doula works alongside you: the aim is to build your confidence and support your choices rather than to take over. Some practitioners offer both and say so in their credentials. Neither is a clinical role.
Do postnatal doulas work overnight in London?
Many do, and overnight support is one of the most requested services in London. Availability, minimum shift lengths, and whether a doula works solo or through an agency with backup cover differ by practice, so confirm on the introductory call.
Is a doula available on the NHS?
No. Postnatal doula support is a private, self-funded service in the UK. The NHS provides your midwife team for the first days and then a health visitor, and both are free — a doula sits alongside that care, not instead of it. Some London boroughs and charities run free or subsidised doula schemes for families on low incomes, and Doula UK runs an Access Fund for families who cannot afford to pay.
What does ‘Doula UK recognised’ mean?
Doula UK is the main UK doula association. A doula completes an approved preparation course, then works through a mentored period before being listed as recognised. It is a professional membership rather than a licence, so it tells you where and how someone trained, not that they are regulated. We reproduce each doula’s stated credentials verbatim so you can judge for yourself.
