What does a child development coach actually do?
A London child development coach supports the parent, not a patient. They help you set up play, routines, and home environments that match your child’s stage, drawing on approaches such as RIE, Pikler, Montessori, and Positive Discipline. They are educators and coaches rather than clinicians, and they do not diagnose or treat.
How is this different from NHS early years support or therapy?
Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, paediatrics, and educational psychology are clinical services delivered by registered professionals who assess and treat. Everyone on this page is deliberately non-clinical. If you suspect a delay, start with your health visitor or GP — in England they can refer you into your local authority’s early years SEND pathway or Portage service, which is free.
How much does a child development coach cost in London?
Rates vary and most coaches sell packages rather than single hours. Where a coach publishes their rates we reproduce them verbatim in pounds; where they do not, the field is left blank rather than estimated. Most offer a free introductory call, which is the cheapest way to test the fit before committing.
Do these coaches work over video?
Most do, and several work exclusively online. Development coaching translates well to video because the work is a conversation with you about what is happening at home, rather than an assessment of your child. That means a coach in Hackney or Richmond is a realistic option wherever in London you live.
