IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant — the internationally recognised lactation qualification, requiring supervised clinical hours, health-sciences education and a board exam, with recertification every five years. In Ireland, IBCLCs in private practice are listed on the register of the Association of Lactation Consultants in Ireland (ALCI). HSE maternity hospitals have lactation consultants, your public health nurse visits after the birth and can support feeding, and the HSE runs free breastfeeding support groups around the country. Parents typically turn to a private IBCLC when they want a longer one-to-one appointment, a home visit, an appointment sooner than the public service can offer, or continuity with the same person over several weeks.

It depends on your policy, and you should confirm with your insurer before you book. Some Dublin consultants state that they provide a receipt you can submit to your health insurer, and at least one on this page says private insurers cover her antenatal classes and postpartum visits.
