How Amsterdam parents choose
- IBCLC is the highest lactation credential. Every consultant here is on the NVL register with an IBCLC number.
- A first home consult costs €120 to €170 on this page. Many insurers reimburse part of it from a supplementary policy; check yours.
- Most consultants come to your home. Some also have a practice room, and several offer phone or video consults.
- Every credential and fee here is verbatim from the consultant’s own site. A blank field means we could not verify it, not that it does not exist.
Important
The consultants listed here are lactation professionals, not your baby’s medical team. For weight-gain concerns, jaundice, signs of dehydration, or any question about your baby’s health, contact your verloskundige, the consultatiebureau or your huisarts. In an emergency call 112. Lactation consultants work alongside regular Dutch maternity care, not instead of it.
Common questions Amsterdam parents ask
How much does a lactation consultant cost in Amsterdam?
Eighteen of the nineteen consultants here publish their fees. A first home consult (consult aan huis) runs from €120 to €170, and a practice visit from €75 to €120. Follow-up consults are mostly €60 to €110. Phone and video consults are usually charged per minute or per block of minutes. Each figure is quoted verbatim, in the consultant’s own wording, from her own site.
Does Dutch health insurance pay for a lactation consultant?
Often, in part. Most practices here say that many insurers reimburse lactatiekundige care, usually from a supplementary policy (aanvullende verzekering) and usually only when the consultant is a registered IBCLC. Cover differs per insurer and per policy, so check yours before you book. Where a practice prints its own reimbursement note, we show it verbatim.
What does IBCLC mean?
IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, the highest lactation credential. It requires supervised clinical hours and a board exam set by the IBLCE, with re-certification every five years. Every consultant on this page appears on the register of the Nederlandse Vereniging van Lactatiekundigen (NVL) with an IBCLC number.
Will a lactation consultant come to my home?
Most do. A home consult is the standard offer for most practices on this page, and some only work at home. Several also see parents at a practice address in Amsterdam, Weesp, Purmerend, IJmuiden or Almere. Travel costs are included by some and charged on top by others, as each price line shows.
Can I get help in English?
Yes. Andrea Hamlett runs an English-language practice for the Amsterdam and Haarlem area, and Azita Javadi states that she works in Dutch, English and Persian. Many other Dutch IBCLCs also speak English; ask when you book.
When should I see a lactation consultant?
Common reasons are a painful latch, low or high supply, slow weight gain, tongue-tie questions, pumping, and returning to work. Earlier is usually easier. If your baby is losing weight, feeds fewer than eight times in 24 hours or has few wet nappies, contact your verloskundige, kraamzorg or consultatiebureau first.
